The edge of glory…
You won’t find me quoting Lady Gaga too often, but we really were on the ‘edge of glory’ yesterday…
We were one away from what would have been a massive 25/1 winner from our Match Winner acca. Carla Suarez Navarro was the one leg that failed, and as Sod’s Law would have it, hers was the very last match of the 10 to complete.
Nobody likes to hear too much of someone banging on about a near miss, but we really are hunting in the right areas this week. So far we’ve just missed out (four times in a row, by just one match each time), but we go again and just one win will send us into a very good place.
Strategy-wise, week one tends to be Match Winner heavy with so many matches taking place. In week two I expect to be tackling a range of other markets including Handicaps, Aces, Total Games and the like.
And of course in the hunt for big returns, our Outright Winner picks can prove key. We currently have 14/1 Petra Kvitova and 66/1 David Goffin through to the 3rd Round, and 50/1 Elise Mertens plays in the 2nd Round today.
From our pre-tournament French Open 2018 – Ones to Watch list – containing a handful of outsiders around the 100/1 mark – Kyle Edmund and Coco Vandeweghe (and Mertens) all play again today, with Pablo Carreno Busta and Camila Giorgi already safely through to the next round.
Back Sam to shine today…
Sam Stosur v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova
Moving onto the Day 5 schedule and when it comes to looking for the potential upsets, I’m a little surprised to see former French Open finalist Sam Stosur priced up as the underdog to beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova today (play starts 10am)…
Stosur also reached the semi finals here two years ago and while something of a veteran on the tour now, Sam has been in decent form on clay this season – including a win over today’s opponent.
Pavlyuchenkova is younger, higher-ranked and on a 6-match winning streak, having won the WTA Strasbourg title last week. However sometimes a busy pre-Grand Slam week can catch up on you at the big one, and Stosur is exactly the kind of tough opponent that could bring the Russian’s run to an end here…
