Fleshing out the new schedule...

Monday 11th May 2020

In your Ones to Watch email today:

  • Baby steps...
  • Germany to keep it going this week...
  • And Florida set for round two...

Baby steps...

It’s not tour tennis as we know it, but the first couple of events under the new playing conditions have shown that the sport can continue behind closed doors.

We’re feeling our way into the newly-created Exhibition and UTR (Universal Tennis Rating) competitions. Over the last four days I sent you my analysis for the events being played in Germany and Florida.

We had a total of four match picks over the weekend. Three successful picks out of four, for around a 25% ROI, is not a bad start. The winners were Opelka @ 17/20, Opelka @ 3/5 and Altmaier @ 8/13.

Germany to keep it going this week...

Yesterday’s standout performance for us was Daniel Altmaier beating Jan Choinski, by an impressive 4-0, 4-2 scoreline.

A newcomer to this event as one of the players added for Series Two in Germany, Altmaier won six of his eight matches, with his only defeats coming at the hands of Series One champion, Yannick Hanfmann.

Hanfmann wasn’t able to beat Dustin Brown for a third time in a week though, with Brown taking our selection out, 4-3, 4-1.

Don’t ask me why the Tennis Point Exhibition Series didn’t follow Series One and have a Playoff day. Let’s see how the third instalment at the Base Tennis club in Höhr-Grenzhausen shapes up. It’s due to take place from Thursday to Sunday this week.

Florida set for round two...

The UTR Pro Match Series had the men last week, with Reilly Opelka coming out on top.

The next event the UTR have lined up is for the weekend of 22nd May, played in the same format but this time with four women competing…

These names are subject to change, but right now the quartet is made up of Alison Riske, Amanda Anisimova, Danielle Collins and Ajla Tomljanovic.

Those four have all appeared several times in Ones to Watch over the last couple of years, so I’m looking forward to seeing them in action and prices up against each other.

Riske got to the Wimbledon quarter finals last summer, and Collins was a semi-finalist at the Australian Open 2019.

Like Opelka, Anisimova featured in our pre-season Ones to Watch in 2020 list. And also just like Reilly, Amanda resides in Florida.

Plenty to follow in the ‘new normal’...

That’s the next two weekends sorted for us, then. With events scheduled in Germany starting this Thursday, 14th May, then back over to Florida on 22nd May.

With a different men’s & women’s series also due to start in Germany on 8th June, plus events in the pipeline in Austria, Spain and France in the next month and beyond, we’ll have plenty of tennis to look at.

I’ve found a website where you can watch the official Tennis Point Exhibition Series live feed for free, too. I’ll share that link on Thursday when the next matches are known.

  • I hope you’re enjoying having some tennis back. You can rest assured I’m following all the form and taking notes, ready for our next ‘match day’ email. How are you finding it? You can email me at: tom.wilson@oxonpress.co.uk

Lookout for your next email from me on Thursday morning, or even better Wednesday evening, if the bookies have their markets up early for the German event.

Best wishes,

Oliver Upstone
