Our ‘lockdown’ list…
Sunday 31st May 2020
In your Ones to Watch email today:
Things started well for our pick Dmitry Popko yesterday, but after winning the first set, he fell away badly to be taken apart by Bjorn Fratangelo, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. Popko’s May winning streak ended at 14 matches.
That brought the curtain down on what turned out to be a pleasingly busy May for us…
Our ‘lockdown’ list…
Today is the 14th straight day that I’ve landed in your inbox with a Ones to Watch article. I hope that you’ve been finding something to enjoy in the new events and matches we’ve been covering.
In a parallel world, I’d be writing to you each morning of the French Open right now. That’s not to be for 2020. But while these new exhibitions and alternative tournaments are never going to be the same as Paris in spring, we’ve dug in and churned out some decent prices and results this month.
I’ve been recording our new daily picks – our ‘lockdown’ list – and our time spent focusing on the match markets, prices and lower-tier players has so far proved a worthwhile exercise.
My list shows that in May we’ve had 30 picks, and to level 1-point stakes at the quoted odds, those bets have produced 9 pts profit, for a 30% ROI. I’d take that on any level of tennis, be it at Roland Garros, or behind closed doors at a tennis club in Germany.
We’ve stuck to our Ones to Watch principals, too. ‘Only’ a 50% strike-rate for those match picks matters not one bit if you end up with a profitable bottom line. That’s because we stay alert for the best prices. Examples from May being a trio of payouts at odds of 7/2 (4.50) and bigger.
Outright daydreams…
I’ve come across a few young players to look out for in the future, too. Maybe they’ll find their way onto the ATP & WTA Tours and into our weekly tournament Outright Winner analysis in months & years to come.
The Outright markets are certainly something I’m missing right now. Give me a tournament draw-sheet to pore over and I’m a happy man…
For me, there’s no better puzzle than all the permutations and possibilities of a day-one tournament draw. Seeds, underdogs, potential upsets, big matches, big prices, and road-maps to the final to plot out. Let’s hope we can return to those Each Way betting days soon.
Showdown confirmed for June…
The ATP & WTA Tours are currently on hold until August. The US Open may yet still take place at the end of summer. And in the meantime, the schedule of alternative events continues to grow…
The Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) has been confirmed for a 13th June start date in France. This event will run over several weekends, and feature some top names, including Top 10 player David Goffin.
Serena Williams’ coach Patrick Mouratoglou is the man behind the UTS. He’s promising every match to be streamed live online. And Patrick is promoting a relaxed approach to the tennis codes of conduct, with players encouraged to show their personality. Let’s see how that pans out with any swearing picked up on the microphones…
The UTS in France is just one event for us to look forward to in June. There are new ones popping up all over the place. There’s more action due to start in Germany this coming week. And the Austria Pro Series continues for week two. Some big names are being lined up to compete elsewhere in Europe and in the USA, too.
And in July, there will be back-to-back tournaments played in Great Britain, including Jamie Murray’s ‘Battle of the Brits’ event.
I’ll be doing my research and keeping a close eye on all these events. I’ll be back in touch on Monday morning with your next update.
Enjoy the good weather, now that we’re allowed out a bit more…
Best wishes,
Tom Wilson
