WTA Rome - wide open at 25/1...

Thursday 13th May 2021

In Ones to Watch today:

  • WTA Rome Masters – Outright Winner pick…

  • One to Watch at 25/1…

  • My pick of the prices in the Last 16...

They say if you want to be the best, then you've got to beat the best....

Our 33/1 outsider Jannik Sinner put in a brilliant account of himself against Rafael Nadal on Wednesday evening, but the Clay Court King was just too good. As I've said before though, there will be more to come from young Sinner - this season, and beyond.

In the women's Rome event, we've got a 200/1 Ones to Watch pick into the Last 16. Now trading at 22/1, Veronika Kudermetova also gets her chance to test herself against the best in the business, taking on world no.1 Ash Barty on Thursday morning.

My pick of the prices in the bottom half...

Kudermetova is in the top half of the WTA Rome draw, which is packed with big names. In comparison, the bottom half has been blown wide open, after tournament favourite Simona Halep had to pull out injured, and Naomi Osaka was dumped out in the 2nd round.

My 20/1 shot Petra Kvitova blew her chance to take advantage of this half, but I'm going in again, with a real chance of a 'surprise' finalist here...

From now on, this side of the draw is there for the taking. It all comes down to price for me, and looking at the revised Outright Winner market ahead of the  Thursday 9am start, the one I like from the eight women remaining in this half is Nadia Podoroska at 25/1...

Yesterday's 2-0 win over Serena Williams was no fluke. As stated when putting the Argentinean on our pre-season Ones to Watch in 2021 list, I don't think last year's French Open semi-final run was a flash in the pan. The 24-year-old is at her best on clay, and with confidence renewed after that big win over Serena, Nadia can kick on from here, having initially made a slow start to 2021.

If we take Podoroska's form on clay in isolation, then her record at all Tour levels since the start of last season is 24 wins from 28 matches. I'm taking her at 25/1 Each Way, and also to beat Petra Martic in the Last 16 on Thursday.
