WTA Madrid - Jil for the upset at 28/1...
Tuesday 3rd May 2022
Good morning. A quick email bulletin from me today, as we look to swoop on an outsider showing some good form in Madrid…
The top half of the WTA Madrid draw is looking the most open, and the name I like at underdog prices in this section right now is Jil Belen Teichmann.
The 24-year-old Swiss is 28/1 for the title, and 2/1+ to beat Elena Rybakina today.
Play starts from 12.30pm onwards, UK time. Bookies will take down the Outright Winner market from the start of play. For the Match Winner betting, Teichmann v Rybakina is due on court from around 4.30pm.
We’ve backed Teichmann as a big-odds Ones to Watch pick a few times in the past. I’ve often referred to her as enigmatic, with a handy taste for raising her game against higher-ranked or big-name opponents.
Having started very well last week with a pair of 2-0 wins, against three-time Madrid champion Petra Kvitova, and then 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez. Jil should fear no-one right now. Despite that form, she’s the biggest price left in the draw.
Opponent Rybakina will like the faster clay conditions here. But this is her first ever meeting with Teichmann - and the left-hander will bring a fighting spirit that could derail the favourite today. Rybakina is a quiet character, and has shrunk a little in the face of pressure before. We’ll take the underdog prices.
