French Open Qualifying - and a 14/1 shot in Geneva...
Monday 16th May 2022
Good evening. It's a Grand Slam week, and that means there's a crackle of excitement in the air here at Ones to Watch HQ. The French Open starts on Sunday...
The Qualifying rounds got underway at the Roland Garros grounds on Monday, with well over 100 players battling it out for a place in the 1st round proper next week.
One Qualifying match that catches my eye on the Tuesday schedule is the veteran Fernando Verdasco to beat Damir Dzumhur. The 38-year-old Spaniard is an old hand, and one of the most experienced clay-court players on the circuit. Fernando has still got plenty of fight and passion left in him. Especially when the motivation is the chance to play in what could well be his last French Open. Dzumhur was last seen retiring injured at the start of May.
Away from the Grand Slam venue, there are four lower-ranking 250-grade events taking place across the ATP and WTA Tours this week...
As ever, the word of warning here is that the very top tier of players have got their eyes firmly on Paris. And as such, star names like Daniil Medvedev (returning from a hernia op) should be swerved as short-price favourites. World no.2 Medvedev is in the top half of the ATP Geneva draw. In the bottom half, another hugely experienced Spanish clay-courter, Albert Ramos-Vinolas is one to follow at 14/1. All four of his career ATP titles have come on clay. He's won one this season, and also reached a semi final on the red stuff.
Back in France, in the bottom half of the ATP Lyon draw, Alex De Minaur is one I'm keen to keep onside. Odds of 8/1 - 6/1 aren't our usual price territory - but then again, the week before a Major isn't the usual tournament landscape. The Australian is as honest as the day is long, and runs like the wind. De Minaur has shown signs of getting back to his best form recently. I like him to have a run here, rather than being a genuine contender at the big one next week.
