WTA Rome: a 10/1 underdog bet for tonight...
Friday 12th May 2023
Good afternoon. World no.1 Iga Swiatek served up her signature dish earlier today, a 6-0, 6-0 ‘double bagel’ score-line against former French Open finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova…
While it’s hard to argue with dominance like that, elsewhere in the women’s Rome Masters draw - there have been a couple of big shocks already…
On Thursday, our old friend Sofia Kenin knocked out world no.2 and tournament second-favourite Aryna Sabalenka. That upset was a 7/1 shot. And world no.3 Jessica Pegula was sent packing by 5/1 match underdog, Taylor Townsend…
This evening’s headline match in Rome could be another banana skin for one of the big names…
World no.6 and reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina is taking on world no.65 Jasmine Paolini. And while Rybakina is without doubt one of the most consistent and formidable opponents on the tour right now, clay is not her most natural playing surface - and the Kazakhstan representative has not had a happy start to the season on the red dirt…
Rybakina is played three, lost two on clay so far in 2023 - and there’s been an injury issue in there, too.
While tonight’s challenger Paolini has little to write home about in terms of form of her own, Jasmine will certainly have the vociferous Italian crowd cheering for her here. And I’ve seen the pocket-dynamo raise her game before when the passion gets going.
Emotion and desire alone won’t get the job done against a Grand Slam champ like Rybakina. But the career formbook says that clay is Paolini’s best surface. And if she can turn nerves into winning adrenaline, I believe the Italian player is capable of getting the home crowd off their feet at times this evening…
The upset win is 4/1. Call me bloody-minded, but I’m going again with my 2-1 Set Betting score angle again here - an option that’s available at as big as 10/1…
Even a rusty or under-par Rybakina is going to have spells of the match where she blitzes the scoreboard for a while; such is her power and determination. That adds to the case for this 2-1 outsider bet for me: if Paolini is to pull off the shock, it’ll most likely have to be by the long route. And that means a three-setter…
It’s also worth noting that Rybakina has never made it as far as the quarter finals here in Rome. In each of her previous two visits to the Italian capital, Elena has lost against a pre-match underdog in the betting… by the 2-1 Set Betting score.
