An update from me - on the road to Paris...
Tuesday 21st May 2024
It’s not often that a whole week will pass on the tours without me putting up a player or two in the tournament Outright Winner markets. But that’s how it is this week…
There are four clay-court events taking place; two men’s and two women’s. Geneva, Lyon. Strasbourg, and Rabat. I’ve looked at the draws. I’ve perused and cross-referenced the form and the bookies’ prices, as I always do. But nobody stands out. And we should never force a bet…
Less is more. Quality over quantity…
This week’s star-name favourites may well be vulnerable at short prices (Novak Djokovic, for example – who is playing the ATP 250-grade event in Geneva for the first time in his career).
And the fact that the French Open is next week, surely means the top-ranked players will be looking to preserve their fitness for the upcoming second Grand Slam tournament of the year.
Yet, despite all that, across this week’s four fields, there isn’t a standout man or woman who appeals to me as an eager-to-back Each Way proposition, at the prices. We will store up our corn, in preparation for Paris next week…
The main event itself starts this Sunday, 26th May. With the 1st round matches then running into the (UK) Bank Holiday Monday…
Here’s our plan for Paris. Something a bit different this year. Change is good. As my old Business Studies teacher used to say: if you’re standing still, then you’re going backwards…
After last summer’s big personal news, when I became a father for the first time. I’ve been reassessing my schedule. And here’s the bit where I stop talking about me, and start talking about you. Refocusing on what it is that Ones to Watch does best…
And the answer to that question can be found in the mantra I always publish before a big tournament like the French Open, Wimbledon, the US Open or Australian Open:
Here at Ones to Watch, we go after appealing outsiders and attractive Each Way prices in the tournament Outright Winner markets…
That’s the bread and butter of your tennis service from me. Yes, we back the occasional underdog in the Match Winner betting. But Player A to beat Player B is never going to give us the 50/1 or 100/1 bank-pleasing, adrenaline-hit that a successful tournament pick will.
So, with the upcoming French Open in mind. And then Wimbledon this summer, with the US Open to come. In terms of your member email schedule, and the recommended bets:
Less is more. Quality over quantity…
That doesn’t mean any drop – at all – in the level or standard of analysis that you will receive. In fact, it may even sharpen the service further. The inkpot and quill will be deployed with fervour, when necessary. Such as at the very start of a tournament, in the form of the in-depth previews and tournament picks that you’re accustomed to as a Ones to Watch follower.
We’ll also be looking to make smart, measured moves during the event. Some of our best results over the years have come by latching onto a player at a great price, halfway through a tournament – once a surge of form, and/ or an opening in the draw, catches the eye. Marketa Vondrousova in week two of Wimbledon last year springs to mind. Or 33/1 youngster Holger Rune at the Paris Masters the autumn before.
Your Ones to Watch, French Open coverage will begin with Email #1 on Friday of this week (24th May). The draws will be made on Thursday. I’ll be mapping out potential underdog routes to the final. And publishing my full set of pre-tournament outright picks, in Friday’s email.
We’ll then let the opening round of matches run their course, assess the lie of the land – and I’ll be back in touch with Email #2 after the Bank Holiday, on Tuesday (28th May). That will set us up for week one at Roland Garros. And I’ll be keeping in touch and alerting you to best-bet opportunities throughout week two and ahead of the finals, too.
That’s the need-to-know info from me to you today. We’ll be targeting big-odds outsiders at the French Open, starting from this Friday, before a ball has even been hit.
And before then, I’ll be in touch tomorrow with some mouthwatering Grand Slam facts and figures – to get us in the mood for Paris…
