Ones to Watch at the World Cup...

Friday 25th November 2022

There’s a big international team tournament taking place this week. The men’s Davis Cup in Malaga…

The semi finals start today, with Australia v Canada. Followed by Italy v Canada tomorrow.

Even a tennis nut like me isn’t going to pretend that this event is anywhere like the scale of the football World Cup going on in Qatar…

No tennis bets from me today. I’ll soon be gathering up my 2022 stats and notes, prices and pointers. And reporting back intermittently between now and New Year, with the new 2023 season firing into action as soon as we hit January.

Including my annual pre-season Ones to Watch Report, naming 10 or so exciting prospects for 2023 and beyond.

I’m always looking to the future, of course. The next big winner and the next young breakthrough star player are only ever just around the corner…

But I just want to take a second this morning to say thanks once again for all your kind words & emails after 19-year-old Holger Rune won the Paris Masters for us earlier this month, paying out at 33/1 & 28/1.

It was great to finish the season with a big win, and a classic Ones to Watch one at that: a teenager surprising everyone at big odds, in a big tournament.

Here’s to more of the same in January and throughout next season. The off-season doesn’t last long. Stay tuned.

Shifting sports for a moment now…

Ones to Watch at the World Cup…

You and I have done well from the golf Majors before, including Cameron Smith winning The Open at 28/1 this year. I’ll be looking again in 2023. And for today…

To carry on my side-line of ‘answers to questions that nobody is asking’ - here are my thoughts on the football World Cup

My Ones to Watch stance is always defined by backing youngsters. Finding promising newcomers and identifying the teenage Next Big Thing/ Real Deal can be a great source of big-odds, ahead-of-the-curve winners. We know that from our tennis success in recent years.

With the football in Qatar in mind, I’ve been impressed by five youngsters in the early stages of this World Cup:

Jude Bellingham (England) age 19

Bukayo Saka (England) age 21

Gavi (Spain) age 18

Pedri (Spain) - 20th birthday today

Jamal Musiala (Germany) age 19

At the last major international tournament, Euro 2020, then-teenager Pedri won the UEFA Young Player of the Tournament award. And the main Player of the Tournament prize went to Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who was just 22 years of age at the time…

I know FIFA is different to UEFA, but those Euro 2020 results could act as a precursor to what unfolds here at the World Cup in the next three weeks…

The five youngsters listed above are the five favourites in the Young Player of the Tournament award at William Hill (this morning’s prices):

Pedri 9/4 (3.25)
Bellingham 10/3 (4.33)
Gavi 7/2 (4.5)
Saka 11/2 (6.5)
Musiala 8/1 (9.0)

World Cup 2022 - Young Player Of The Tournament

But when I look at the main (senior) Player of the Tournament award - the Golden Ball - the prices for these exciting youngsters are much more, well, exciting…

Pedri 25/1
Bellingham 25/1
Gavi 28/1
Saka 28/1
Musiala 66/1

World Cup 2022 - Golden Ball

Watch out for these youngsters in Qatar…

If you’re interested in taking a look at this market, then head to the bookies in-between matches today. Or after 10pm at night, and before 10am in the morning. As the bookies take down the Golden Ball market during play (although the Betfair Exchange market stays open).

Skybet also appear to be keeping their market up throughout the day, for the time being at least. They don’t have all the players listed, but as I write, they have Bellingham at 25/1, and Saka at 33/1.

Along with those two England lads, I’d also been keen in particular to follow that pair of very highly-rated young Spanish midfielders. Pedri was 25/1 at William Hill this morning, and Gavi 28/1.

You can check here with William Hill (when the Golden Ball market is up). And compare prices from the mainstream firms at Oddschecker.

Musiala (66/1) and Germany might be up against it to qualify from their group, having lost to Japan in their opener, and with Spain to come next - but you never know…

  • I’ll also be looking to back those youngsters game-by-game, for example for Anytime Scorer, and the official FIFA Player of the Match award (‘Man of the Match’ market at Bet365)

I’ll be in touch next time with my 2022 tennis review coming up, and our first look ahead to the 2023 season…

  • If you want a dedicated, daily email service for the World Cup (and you’re not a member yet) - check out my colleague Oliver Upstone’s Qatar 2022 service here. In the pre-tournament betting, Oliver went for Belgium’s Kevin De Bruyne for the Golden Ball - a bet that’s available at 25/1 with Skybet today…
