Tonight: Michelsen v Bonzi in the 'money match'...
Friday 8th November 2024
Since Sebastian Korda won Washington for us this summer, we’ve hit the bar several times with our Ones to Watch tournament selections…
At the US Open, 66/1 Outright Winner pick Taylor Fritz finished runner-up for an Each Way payout at half the odds…
In Toronto, 20/1 Emma Navarro fell in the semi finals, ‘just one win’ shy of landing us the place odds or better…
As did 40/1 Paula Badosa in Cincinnati (semi final)... 25/1 Camila Osorio in Guadalajara (semi final)...
And of course, 66/1 - 150/1 Karen Khachanov in the Paris semi final, just last week…
That’s why we call the semi final the ‘money match’ - win it, and our Each Way pick is assured to land us a place payout. With the chance of a big win-only ticket going into the final…
This week, we’re on the hunt again…
Our 20/1 shot in the Metz Semi Finals…
Our sole bet of the week, Alex Michelsen at 20/1 Each Way, with 1/2 odds for 1-2 places. Is through to the Metz semi finals, where he’s due on court from 5pm+ UK time…
If Michelsen wins the match this evening, the Each Way part will be in. If you’re on at 20/1, that means 10/1 to win the semi final, and so on - depending on the price you obtained.
Our 20-year-old American Ones to Watch pick takes on a home player. France’s Benjamin Bonzi is also searching for first ever career ATP Tour title. Age 28, Bonzi has two runner-up trophies to show for his efforts over the years. Young Alex has got three finals under his belt already…
This is an interesting match-up today. Michelsen is the only seed - and the highest-ranked player - still left in the Metz draw…
On the other hand, Frenchmen have a great track record in general at this tournament. Twelve of the last 15 Metz finals have featured at least one home player, including 10 French champions.
And for his part, Bonzi has come through qualifying to reach the semis this week, winning five straight matches without dropping a single set. The world no.124 has won 19 of his last 20 matches on indoor hard courts, and all at French venues, too…
The caveat being, apart from this week’s ATP 250 event in Metz, those 14 other wins were all achieved on the lower-tier Challenger circuit. Still, form is form - and the home player clearly has momentum coming into tonight’s match…
Our boy Michelsen has maybe got the jitters a couple of times this week. For example, double-faulting at set point yesterday, and again on break point down. But to his great credit, Alex has come back fighting on each occasion, and managed to deliver his best tennis when he really needed it. That counts for a lot…
The bookies make this match 50-50, and you can see why.
Our Ones to Watch picks are consistently doing what we want them to: get deep into the tournament, certainly further than their day-one odds would suggest. Getting us into numerous ‘positions to win’...
The magic key, of course, is we just need one or two more to get over the final hurdle…
I’ve already started gathering up my notes and getting ready for the coming 2025 season. They barely stop for Christmas, and then the tours are back on it.
If you get the opportunity to watch the match, Michelsen v Bonzi will be live on Sky Sports at 5pm or later today. And you can get live streaming on bookie apps such as Bet365, too.
It’s easier to say when we win, or course - but my sign-off remains as positive as ever:
Enjoy the tennis…
Best wishes,
Oliver Upstone
