Ones to Watch in Athens and Metz - at 16/1 and 33/1...

Monday 3rd November 2025

Play starts from 12 noon in this week’s two ATP tournaments, so let’s get straight down to it today…

French indoor tournaments always have a lot of home-player entrants - and tend to come with a French-heavy roll-call of former champions…

Metz is no exception. Four of the last six winners of the Moselle Open have been Frenchman. And seven of the last nine finals have featured at least one home player.

Given our recent ‘ones that got away’ notes, let’s go again this week with the massive-serving Frenchman, GIOVANNI MPETSHI PERRICARD. One of his two ATP titles to date have come on indoor hard courts, and he can drill his way into a late-season run here if he’s on his game.

LORENZO SONEGO is a former winner of this event, and the Italian showed some decent form last week in the bigger 1000-grade competition in Paris (Metz is 250), with a couple of match wins - before taking a set off an in-form Daniil Medvedev.

Over in Athens, where the former Belgrade tournament has taken up a new residency. Novak Djokovic is the headline name. The Serbian star was a winner and runner-up at this event when it was held in his capital city. But is the 38-year-old fit? And will he take any chances with the prestigious end-of-season ATP Finals coming up next in Turin? An outright price of 13/8 (2.63) doesn’t interest me on those grounds.

Instead, on the opposite side of the draw, we’ll take a flyer on BOTIC VAN DE ZANDSCHULP as a 33/1 shot. The big Dutchman has featured in my write-ups a couple of times this year; along with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, he’s endured match-point heartache in ATP finals before - and the quest for a first senior trophy continues. The 30-year-old should be looking at a 250-grade tournament like this as a prime opportunity to show what he can do.
