Tennis Betting Advice - October 2022

Would you believe it?

Monday 3rd October 2022

You couldn’t make it up…

It was only a week or so ago that I noted that some of the players we’d been tracking (and backing) this season have since gone on to win their first titles and/ or taste further success on the tour. Czech teenager Linda Fruhvirtova, Russian 23-year-old Liudmila Samsonova, and Chinese 19-year-old Qinwen Zheng being three cases that spring to mind.

And after last week’s result in Sofia, things are getting a bit surreal…

Is it possible to ‘predict’ a player’s breakthrough run too early?

On September 20th, I flagged up Marc-Andrea Huesler as a general 28/1 shot for ATP San Diego, with Betfred going 50/1. Noting that the tall 26-year-old Swiss player was making progress and flying under the radar.

That week in San Diego, Huesler crashed and burned in the very first round.

Do you need me to tell you what happened next…?

Last week in Sofia, Huesler blew through the draw, reaching his first ATP final – and then taking the trophy. Becoming the 12th player to win a maiden ATP Tour title this season. Bet365 paid 28/1.

Add that to my list of near misses. And I haven’t even mentioned the 10 out of 11 finalists that we’ve seen beaten at the finish line this year. Including 30/1 shot Maria Camila Osorio Serrano at WTA Monterrey, to name just one… she had five match points in that final (!).

Chin up – it’s a new month…

Okay, so that’s enough lamenting and wound-licking. Chin up. We’re into a new month, and looking for a fresh batch of big-odds picks to get us back into the pay-out zone…

October kicks off with four tournaments. The global locations of these mean I’ll probably be best getting my Ones to Watch advice to you in the evenings. For example, tomorrow’s play in Tokyo starts from 3am, UK time.

This week’s tournaments:

WTA 500 Ostrava, Czech Rep – Agel Open 2022 – indoor hard

WTA 250 Monastir, Tunisia – Jasmin Open Monastir – hard

ATP 500 Astana, Kazakhstan – Astana Open – indoor hard

ATP 500 Tokyo, Japan – Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships – hard

Look out for emails from me this week, mostly at night-time. Possibly tonight, depending on the markets (Monday).
