Max to serve it up again today...

Friday 14th October 2022

It was good to get a ‘W’ back by our name yesterday. Teenager Max Hans Rehberg put in another clean performance, beating the veteran Robin Haase in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6.

Max has now won seven matches in a row, all on indoor hard courts. And the 19-year-old German posted some impressive numbers again yesterday, winning 86% of his 1st Serves. And saving the only break-point that he faced.

Today’s opponent Elmar Ejupovic stands 6’4” and brings some mean serving stats of his own this week. The 29-year-old German has won four matches here in Ismaning, having come through the two qualifying rounds to reach the main draw.

In all four matches, Ejupovic has hit 14+ aces, winning over 80% of 1st Serve points in the last three. Those figures suggest we could be in for a tiebreak and/ or a narrow scoreboard result this afternoon.

A few reasons keep me keen to back Max again today…

The younger player by some 10 years, Rehberg is on the up in his career, and the youngster has the potential to greatly improve on his current 500+ world ranking. I’m not sure the same can be said for Ejupovic who, with all due respect, at age 29 has never cracked the top 300.

Back to those serving stats, and while the older of the two Germans can be expected to bring the aces today, Elmar has been giving up plenty of points to opponents on their own serve, too. Suggesting his return game is not great, and his court movement might not be the best. For example, in three of Ejupovic’s four matches at this venue this week, his opponent has slammed 17+ aces past him, with all four players registering 79%+ for winning their 1st Serve points.

Finally, Ejupovic’s last three encounters have all gone to the full three sets. His legs might be feeling it a bit today. Rehberg has won two out of two in straight sets, 2-0, and the 19-year-old brings the momentum here.

The bookies make it close, and it could be in terms of the final scoreboard. But odds of 4/5 and 8/11 don’t give enough edge to the better ball player here, and in my opinion, that’s Rehberg.
