Ones to Watch this week - Coco knocking on the door...
Sunday 16th October 2022
Sunday Night Club...
Good evening - or good morning, depending on when you're reading this...
German teenager Max Hans Rehberg gave us a couple of nice match wins on the Challenger Tour last week. Our attention now turns back to the main ATP & WTA Tours...
There are four tournaments on the list this week. I'm covering two of them in this email, with a quartet of selections at appealing prices.
Play starts from around lunchtime UK time in Antwerp, Belgium. And from 4pm+ at Guadalajara in Mexico.
Here are my Ones to Watch picks:
ATP Antwerp. At the 'European Open' in Antwerp, I've got one man to kick us of at 20/1+. If previous form at this event counts - and I believe it does - then Diego Schwartzman is one to follow here. He's best known as a clay court player. But maybe these Antwerp indoor hard courts don't play as fast as some... as the diminutive Diego has done great here before. Schwartzman was runner-up here last year. From five appearances in total, he's posted three finals and a semi final at this event.
WTA Guadalajara. This is a big tournament, a 1000-grade competition to round off the standard WTA season before the year-end finals which are just around the corner. Two players who have had great seasons and could have another big effort left in them this week are Veronika Kudermetova and Beatriz Haddad Maia, at 20/1+ and 25/1, respectively.
Kudermetova has made three finals this year, and reached the semi finals in her last two. She's hit a career-high no.12 in the world, and regularly gets my respect as a dark horse in big tournaments.
Haddad Maia has won the first two WTA single titles of her career this season, climbed inside the Top 20 for the first time, and reached the quarter finals in three of her last four tournaments. At August's 1000-grade event in Toronto, the Brazilian reached the final. Beatriz also made the semi finals on outside hard courts (the playing surface for this week in Guadalajara) here in Mexico earlier in the year, at WTA Monterrey.
Last but not least, another player knocking on the door for a big trophy win is Ones to Watch youngster, Cori 'Coco' Gauff...
Gauff played some great stuff in San Diego last week, before being taken out by world no.1 Iga Swiatek in the quarter finals. Coco has now reached the quarter finals in four of her last five tournaments. A run that includes the US Open in New York.
As well as that batch of potentially ominous hard-court form, a different angle to consider here is that Gauff has arguably done her best work when not playing in the USA with the big spotlight on her. Her two WTA singles titles to date have come at Linz in Austria, and Parma in Italy. Coco has entered the Top 10 this year - and is good enough to go higher very soon. Odds of 14/1 and 12/1 are worth taking for one of the best players in the draw.
