Ones to Watch in Brussels at 11/1 and 28/1...

Monday 13th October 2025

There are five tournaments taking place this week. With early starts (UK time) in Kazakhstan, Japan, and China. And afternoon action in Belgium and Sweden…

We’re starting our week with the ATP Brussels ‘European Open’...

Play begins in the 1st round from 2.30pm today. Bookies will take down the Outright market during those encounters. But the prices will be online again by tonight, and in the morning. And neither of our two picks today are in action until Tuesday.

Let’s get down to it:

A big talent - and a big server…

There’s a buzz around Brazilian teenager JOAO FONSECA, and rightly so. The last time I got the ‘real deal’ feel like this about a young man on the tour was for a Spanish teenager called Carlos Alcaraz. The rest there is history…

I like both Fonseca’s game - including a gasp-worthy forehand - and his on-court fire and charisma. Crowds of supporters cheer him on wherever you see him, and he conducts them with his racket and a clenched fist.

The 19-year-old world no.45 has already got three senior ATP singles titles to his name, separating him from his potentially tricky 1st-round opponent this week, the as-yet-trophyless 30-year-old Botic Van De Zandschulp. Fonseca beat the Dutchman in the Davis Cup last season.

A 12-4 career-to-date match win-loss record (75%) on indoor hard courts suggests that young Joao will like the conditions under the roof and under the lights here in Belgium.

At big prices, GIOVANNI MPETSHI PERRICARD is also a young gun to follow in Brussels this week…

The 22-year-old Frenchman is ranked no.37, and won his first two ATP titles in 2024, including one indoors at ATP Basel last October.

I said the other week that Giovanni was probably looking forward to the tour returning to Europe for the indoor swing. A big server like him - he’s one of the top ‘most aces’ candidates in the men’s game right now, and stands tall at 6’7” - can go very well at a venue like this. His serve can do massive damage. I was expecting to see Mpetshi Perricard at shorter prices this week. We’ll take the biggest odds on offer…

Giovanni has a 2-0 head-to-head record against tomorrow’s 1st-round opponent, Emil Ruusuvuori. The Finnish 26-year-old has openly spoken about his recent mental-health break from the sport, and is still looking to get back to consistent winning ways since returning to the tour this season - currently residing at a lowly no.608 in the world rankings.
