Big names tumble in China…

In your Ones to Watch email today:
We’ve been here before. As we head into the second half of the week, two of our Ones to Watch picks are into the quarter finals…
Big names tumble in China…
In the WTA Wuhan draw I noted that the star names in the top half of the draw looked best avoided. The players I mentioned – Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina, Angelique Kerber, Madison Keys and Petra Kvitova – have all crashed out.
In the bottom half, our outsider selection Monica Puig is still very much in the mix. Backed on Monday night at highs of 100/1, 80/1 and 66/1, Puig was down to 25/1 before taking on World No.2 Caroline Wozniacki earlier today…
Puig won that one, battling through a tough two sets, 7-6, 7-5 in over two hours. On paper, Wozniacki was the toughest opponent in the Puerto Rican’s path in the bottom section of the draw. We have a great price on our side. Monica’s price will be cut again when the bookies update the Outright Winner market this evening.
Meanwhile, in Uzbekistan…
The Wuhan event is the big one this week. The prize fund there is $2,746,000 – something that the smaller WTA Tashkent tournament can nowhere near match. The kitty in Uzbekistan stands at a modest $250,000.
Sometimes the smaller events are the ones where we can sneak in with an off-the-radar player. We had an 18/1 winner here a couple of years back thanks to Karolina Pliskova’s lower-ranked twin sister, Kristyna Pliskova. This week we have Margarita Gasparyan making the quiet run for us…
The Russian was a best-price 19/1 when we backed her on Monday night, with 16/1, 15/1 and 14/1 widely available. Having pulled off a brilliant comeback this morning – recovering from 0-4 down in the final set to take it 7-6 – Gasparyan is now a 5/1 joint-favourite for the Tashkent title.
Once again, we have some great value Ones to Watch prices on our side. Puig and Gasparyan play in the quarter finals on Thursday morning. All the action is live on BT Sport.
Enjoy the tennis…
Best wishes,
Tom Wilson
