Walk on…

I’ve been away for the weekend. Walking in the Peak District. A bit of time in the fresh air with no mobile internet is sure to have done me good…

I set off with the knowledge that last week’s 10/1 pick Maria Sakkari was in to the WTA Seoul semi finals. That’s as far as she got. Once again – we were close.

In the opposite side of that Seoul draw, one of our picks from the week before, 10/1 Ajla Tomljanovic, came good this time by reaching the final – this time as 20/1 shot. One to watch, indeed. This week there are a couple of players at Each Way prices that I am following up on. See below.

I’m off the motorway and straight back at my desk now, and the night is drawing in...

Play starts early in the morning – 4am ‘our time’ in China and 6am Uzbekistan. So I’ll head swiftly into our first picks for this week’s tournaments. The Women’s events get my attention today.

This week’s picks – at 14/1, 19/1 and 100/1…

The big one in the Women’s is the WTA Wuhan tournament in China. The top half of the draw is absolutely packed with big names, big talent – and short prices. Top-ranking players such as Simona Halep (6/1), Elina Svitolina (10/1), Angelique Kerber (12/1), Madison Keys (12/1) and Petra Kvitova (20/1) all battling it out, amongst others, for just one spot in the final. At this stage of the season, I’ll be leaving that top half alone, thank you very much.

The bottom half looks much more winnable and the two players for me are Karolina Pliskova (14/1) and Monica Puig (100/1)…

Pliskova won the WTA Tokyo title last week, beating woman of the moment Naomi Osaka in front of the Japanese fans in the final. Pliskova was a US Open quarter finalist for us last month, and with her new coaching set-up in place and form & confidence on the up, we should follow her again this week.

Puig is another name I’ve been keen to follow in the back-end of this summer. And as we head into autumn I still get the feeling the Puerto Rican has a winning streak up her sleeve. She was a 12/1 pick and quarter finalist for us earlier this month. She’s already won two matches here in Wuhan to come through qualifying, and another with a 2-1 win over the tricky Kirsten Flipkens in the 1st Round proper. Puig looks a massive price here.

Over in the smaller WTA Tashkent event in Uzbekistan, an open-looking draw could present itself nicely for Margarita Gasparyan (19/1). There is really nobody to be scared of in this draw, and the talented Russian could pull off a great comeback victory – having missed a lot of time out of the game through knee surgeries. The 24-year-old has been back on the tour this summer and opened up this week with a straight sets 2-0 win in the 1st Round.

A silky one-handed backhand showcases the potential of Gasparyan; we can overlook her lowly ranking of #299 as that’s down to the injury layoff. She’s been Top 50 before and could be back there soon enough.
