Get on Sabalenka in Wuhan...
Thursday 27th September 2018
In your Ones to Watch email today:
Just a quick update from me today – and a bet to place before the Friday morning matches start.
Our 100/1 outsider pick for the WTA Wuhan title, Monica Puig, gave it a good run this week – dropping to as short as 8/1 before her quarter final this morning. That’s as far as she got, but she outstripped her price by a mile. And we were right to target a ‘long shot’ in the bottom half of the Wuhan draw. There will be an unseeded player in the final. Just not the one we picked on Monday.
In the other side of the draw, Aryna Sabalenka is franking her form as one of the breakthrough players of the summer. The 20-year-old from Belarus has won 16 of her last 20 matches, with two of those defeats coming to World No.1 Simona Halep and US Open winner Naomi Osaka. That’s how good you have to be to beat Sabalenka right now.
Tomorrow’s semi final opponent Ashleigh Barty was struggling with her right arm today, and was a bit fortunate to get past an erratic quarter final opponent in Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. I’ve also seen the Aussie ‘choke’ a little in pressure situations before.
Sabalenka on the other hand seems to absolutely relish big matches. She belts the ball like there’s no tomorrow. Odds of 10/11 (1.91) look generous to win the match. But I prefer 13/5 (3.60) for her to go all the way and take the Wuhan trophy home. If she beats Barty on Friday morning, that price will look very good indeed.
