Ones to Watch in Hamburg & Strasbourg…
Sunday 20th September 2020
In your Ones to Watch email today:
Knocking on the door…
At the US Open a couple of weeks back, we had two Ones to Watch players come close to knocking out Serena Williams…
In the 4th round in New York, our 50/1 outsider Maria Sakkari went a break up in the final set v Serena, but couldn’t get over the line.
Then, in the next round, at the quarter final stage, our 100/1 pick Tsvetana Pironkova also had the same third-set lead over the American, only to be reeled in eventually.
Williams was then taken out in her next match by Victoria Azarenka.
Earlier today, our 150/1 Ones to Watch selection, Casper Ruud, put up a great effort in Rome. Novak Djokovic proved too good in the end. But we’ll see more from Ruud, and get more chances to back him at big prices.
That’s the second year running that Djokovic has stopped our outsider bet at the semi final stage in the Rome Masters, one match away from a chunky Each Way payout. I guess that’s what World No.1’s do.
Last year in Italy, Djokovic stopped the run of our 90/1 pick, Diego Schwartzman. As I write this evening Schwartzman is locked in battle in the semis v another frequent name in this column, the wildly talented Denis Shapovalov.
We’re knocking on the door. We’re getting players into good positions in tournaments, at very good prices. It’s all good…
The quest continues this week. There are two events on the clay calendar, before we head to Paris for the French Open next weekend…
Ones to Watch this week…
I’ll be brief this evening, what with this being my second email to you today…
At WTA Strasbourg, in the top half of the draw, we’ll let Kiki Bertens (4/1 at best, tournament favourite) and Elena Rybakina (8/1 and 7/1) fight it out to reach the final. I want better than single-figure odds.
In the bottom half, I’m also not keen on Elina Svitolina at just 5/1. The Ukrainian didn’t look to be enjoying her time on court much in Rome. She’s hard to trust at short prices at the best of times.
The two women I like in that bottom side of the Strasbourg draw are both playing each other in the next round…
Jil Belen Teichmann (12/1) has been a 100/1 pick for us on two occasions this summer. We won’t get those odds in this smaller tournament. But the 23-year-old Swiss is on the up, and at her best on clay. I like her game.
Teichmann plays a former Strasbourg champion next, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (20/1)…
The Russian is the archetypal all-or-nothing women’s player. When on song, Pavlyuchenkova’s power game is a joy to behold. On the bad days, she looks really bad. A good win over the hard-hitting Alison Van Uytvanck in round one bodes well for a decent week here though.
As does the history of heavy hitters winning this tournament, with names like Sam Stosur, Andrea Petkovic, and Dayana Yastremska all on the trophy in the last decade.
Over at ATP Hamburg, it’s again a case of letting the short prices see if they can deliver in the top side of the draw. Daniil Medvedev (around 4/1) is the man to beat.
In the bottom half of the German draw-sheet, Stefanos Tsitsipas is looking to regain some form and confidence after his US Open gut-wrencher (lost after having six match points). We’re not interested in odds of 9/2 (5.5).
A price we do want, though, is 25/1 for Cristian Garin…
A recent pick in Rome, and also a 10/1 winner for us on clay earlier this season, the 24-year-old Chilean is a genuine threat at any clay-court event on the circuit.
Garin’s side of the draw could work out well, if names like Kei Nishikori and Gael Monfils aren’t fully fit or at the races, which appears to be the case if Rome is anything to go by. Odds of 25/1 appeal.
Ones to Watch:
Outright Winner picks – Each Way
Each Way terms: 1/2 odds 1-2 places.
Play starts from 9am, UK time.
I’ll be back next weekend, when we’ll be on daily duty at the French Open.
Enjoy the tennis…
Best wishes,
Tom Wilson
