Ones to Watch in San Diego at 18/1 and 14/1…
Coming just days after a Grand Slam, this week’s WTA 500-grade event in San Diego doesn’t feature a full list of elite names…
One of the favourites, Belinda Bencic, fell at the first hurdle last night.
And at the top of the betting, the same question marks as all summer remain for 4/1 Ons Jabeur, 7/1 Maria Sakkari, and 11/1 Caroline Garcia….
With a mixture of fitness concerns and/ or lack of form & confidence making those three hard to trust right now.
Sakkari always looks in great shape physically, but by her own admission she struggles with the mental pressures of the game. Just one WTA title to her name is a poor haul for a consistent Top 10 player.
In the bottom half of the draw, our regular Ones to Watch pick Ekaterina Alexandrova has been having a reliable and quietly progressive 2023. Nothing spectacular. But the Russian world no.19 has reached two finals and won one title this season.
Before the US Open, Ekaterina was a 10/1 Each Way runner-up for us at the WTA 250 event in Cleveland.
On her favoured hard courts again this week. Alexandrova can utilise the pace in her shots to challenge for the honours in San Diego. Odds of 18/1 and 15/1 are available as I write.
This was a new tournament on the women’s circuit last year, with Iga Swiatek beating Donna Vekic in the final. Neither are here this time…
Danielle Collins loves a fast court and tends to play some of her best stuff at home in the States. She’s 14/1 – 12/1, and if she gets through her opener this evening, will face the winner of this evening’s match between Alexandrova and Jelena Ostapenko.
Collins made the semi finals here in San Diego last season.
The American’s best runs this year, a quarter final at the big WTA 1000 in Montreal last month, and a semi final at the lower-tier event in Austin back in March, both show that Danielle likes North American hard-court conditions.
Add in the fact that Alexandrova is available at Even Money to beat the big-hitting but unreliable Ostapenko today – and boasts a notable 5-2 head-to-head record against the Latvian. With Jelena having previous for flopping after a deep run at a bigger tournament (Ostapenko beat Swiatek and reached the US Open quarter finals last week). I make Alexandrova both a match and tournament pick today.
With Collins one to watch in this side of the draw, too. Having backed Danielle as a big-outsider in New York last time out, we don’t want to miss out on a run at this week’s smaller and ‘more winnable’ looking American hard-court event…
Should Alexandrova and Collins meet in the next round, it will be their first encounter – with the victor going through to the quarter finals.
