WTA Guadalajara: One to Watch at 28/1...
Monday 8th September 2025
Ones to Watch is all about backing big-price outsiders…
Sometimes we have to leave a player behind for a while, as the price doesn’t suit…
For example, 20-year-old Alexandra Eala was a 100/1 early-bird pick for us at the US Open, where she reached the 2nd round. The up-and-coming youngster then flew down to Mexico, and won a lower-tier tournament there last week. The world no.61 is now in Brazil for the WTA 250 Sao Paulo event this week - and the bookies have Eala at just 9/2 (5.5) in general to win what would be a first full-tier WTA title.
Or how about another potential future star of the women’s game, Iva Jovic… the 17-year-old world no.73 has won two lower-grade ITF titles this season, and the bookmakers have her as short as 11/2 (6.5) to claim a maiden WTA trophy win in Mexico this week…
We’re going for a much bigger price at that 500-grade hard-court tournament - WTA Guadalajara - which starts tonight with the 1st round getting underway from 9pm, UK time. Our pick isn’t due to play until tomorrow…
Let’s start the week by taking 28/1 Each Way for one of our familiar, smaller-event picks: Camila Osorio…
The Colombian shortened her playing name a while ago, probably to the relief of many websites and writers. These days, Maria Camila Osorio Serrano appears on most bookie lists as simply: Camila Osorio.
We were on Osorio at this event last September, at 25/1, and she made it to the semi finals.
Currently ranked no.69, but previously as high as no.33 in the world. Camila is best known for her clay-court prowess. But as I’ve said before, the 23-year-old is a real fighter, often comes out on the right end of a three-set scrap, and always backs herself…
It’s a great winning attitude to have, and often pays dividends – especially when she manages to avoid injuries, and conditions suit…
Much of Osorio’s winning is done in central and south America. All three of her WTA singles titles to date have come at her home event in Bogota, Colombia (on clay). Including a title there earlier this season. Camila is also a previous finalist here in Mexico on hard courts, at WTA Monterrey. She’s also won ITF titles in Ecuador and Colombia.
With a less-than-scary field assembled in Guadalajara this week (for a 500-grade event), coming as it does so soon after the US Open. And placed in the more appealing side of the draw here. A player like Osorio, at a price like 28/1, in a tournament like this, is ‘one to watch’…
