History repeats at 100/1...

Last week we looked at repeat winners on the tour. Noting several players who’d won a tournament or reached the final at an event in the past – and gone on to do well again at the same event this season.

The pattern continued last week, with three more players returning to scenes of former glories...

Pablo Andujar was the big winner, having returned from injury this season following multiple surgeries on his elbow. Dropping as low as No.1824 in the world rankings this February, Andujar is now up to No.154 after winning ATP Marrakech last week – where he was priced as a 100/1 outsider.

After last week’s win, all four of Andujar’s career title wins have come on clay, as well as all four of his runner-up appearances in finals.

What’s more, three of the Spaniard’s four ATP titles have been won at the Grand Prix Hassan II event in Morocco – which is now held in Marrakech having formerly been in Casablanca.

And there were two other ‘repeat winners’ on the tours last week...

For the second year running, Lara Arruabarrena reached the final at WTA Bogota.

And also for the second year running, Steve Johnson won the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston. Five of the last eight ATP Houston titles have now been won by Americans.

  • Trends like that are worth following and can prove very profitable. Over on my full members-only Ones to Watch service last week, we were on both Steve Johnson AND the 33/1 runner-up, Tennys Sandgren

Price Watch – they keep on coming...

Here are the full set of winners and finalists from last week’s tournaments:

ATP Marrakech
Winner: P.Andujar (100/1)
Runner-up: K.Edmund (7/1)

ATP Houston
Winner: S.Johnson (20/1)
Runner-up: T.Sandgren (33/1)

WTA Lugano
Winner: E.Mertens (14/1)
Runner-up: A.Sabalenka (40/1

WTA Bogota
Winner: A-K.Schmiedlova (20/1)
Runner-up: L.Arruabarrena (7/1)

Six of the eight finalists were at double-figure prices, including tournament winners at 14/120/120/1 and 100/1. Proving the point once again that backing the short prices and favourites is really not to way to go.

Join me on the clay...

The build-up to next month’s French Open is underway...

It’s the Monte Carlo Masters this week – the first clay-court Masters event of the season. Followed by no fewer than nine more clay tournaments coming up this month alone...

Over on my Ones to Watch members-only service we’ll be tackling the clay events every week. If you’re not onboard yet, take a test drive and see what it’s all about with a 14-day Free Trial here. We had an 18/1 winner and a 33/1 Each Way finalist last week, and I’ll be looking to add more big prices like that soon...

Enjoy the tennis,

Best wishes,

Oliver Upstone
