Notes from the Tour: The main man on clay*...

Thursday 2nd April 2026

Since the start of the 2024 tennis season, Luciano Darderi has won more tour-level clay-court titles than any other player…

World no.1 Carlos Alcaraz has won four clay titles in that period…

But after Luciano Darderi lifted the ATP Santiago trophy on 1st March, the 24-year-old Italian is top of the clay-court silverware chart, with five titles since February 2024.

That’s a great stat – and a great achievement for the current world no.19…

But that trophy haul does come with an asterisk next to it…

All of Darderi’s career trophy wins – all on clay – have come at ATP 250 level:

(Winning odds in brackets)

2026
ATP 250 Santiago (7/1)

2025
ATP 250 Marrakech (12/1)
ATP 250 Bastad (11/1)
ATP 250 Umag (4/1)

2024
ATP 250 Cordoba (50/1)

  • Darderi was also runner-up at the ATP 250 in Buenos Aires in February, having gone off at 5/1
  • He could be about to add another 250 trophy to the cabinet this week, too. Darderi is in Morocco to defend his ATP Marrakech title. Having gone off at no bigger than 3/1, he’s through to the quarter finals, where he’ll face Yannick Hanfmann on Friday, with a 3-0 career head-to-head in Luciano’s favour (all on clay, all in straight sets, 2-0)

Can Luciano make the leap?

ATP 500 and Masters 1000 are the two higher grades still to be conquered...

And of course, the big one itself, the clay-court Grand Slam, the best-of-five-sets challenge – the French Open at Roland Garros (Darderi’s best finish to date is the 2nd round in 2024, from three career visits).

  • Fans of Carlos Alcaraz could justifiably point out that their man’s 4 trophies in the same time-span greatly outweigh the achievements of the lesser-known Darderi: Spanish wonderkid Alcaraz has scooped up 2 French Opens and 2 Masters 1000 titles on clay (Monte-Carlo and Rome) since 2024

However, Italy’s no.4 Darderi is now a world Top 20 player (no.19), with a chance of going deeper at bigger events coming up, as he’ll be seeded at larger tournaments…

What’s more, Luciano is setting his goals high. He’s already achieved the 2026 target of breaking the Top 20. And he’s bold about the next step, quoted as declaring: “By the end of the year I want to be Top 10.”

Big events coming up on clay…

The spring tennis calendar is completely focused on clay, with the build-up to the French Open in Paris consisting of several big tournaments:

  • Monte-Carlo (Masters 1000) next week…
  • Then back-to-back ATP 500 tournaments in Barcelona and Munich...
  • Followed by Masters 1000 events in Madrid at the end of April, Rome at the start of May... then Hamburg (500), Geneva (250) - and then Roland Garros itself (24th May)

Darderi has never played Monte-Carlo or Barcelona before. He did however make the quarter finals in Munich last year…

Madrid and Rome he’s yet to go further than the 3rd round. Hamburg he’s made the quarter finals two years running. And he’s never played Geneva…

Major progress…

The 2026 clay season is a big one for Luciano. With the spring run culminating in a genuine opportunity for Darderi to post a best-ever performance at the French Open. So far, he’s lost in qualifying (2023), made the 2nd round proper (2024), and been knocked out in the 1st round (2025). That adds up to just one Roland Garros match win on his career form chart to date – a record that the Italian will surely be gunning to improve on…

After all, this is a player who has won eight out of 10 matches on clay so far this year. And has been showing signs of improvement at best-of-five-set Grand Slam level, too…

Darderi has posted career-best results at his most recent attempts at the other three Majors:

  • 3rd round Wimbledon 2025 (grass)
  • 3rd round US Open 2025 (hard court)

And earlier this year, a best-ever Grand Slam run:

  • 4th round (last 16) at the Australian Open - where there was no shame in being beaten by the defending champion and hard-court star man, world no.2 Jannik Sinner

Keep an eye on Darderi…

Let’s keep Luciano Darderi in mind at underdog prices in the upcoming ATP 500 and Masters 1000 events on clay this spring…

And while the step up to French Open fame is massive one, I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t inform you that in the current ante-post betting for the men’s Roland Garros 2026 title, BetMGM & co (VirginBet, BetUK, LiveScoreBet) are 500/1 Each Way for Darderi… with William Hill at 200/1… and Bet365 at 100/1.

  • No other bookies appear to be listing Darderi for the French Open yet. Latest market on Oddschecker here

The French Open starts from 24th May. But first of all, the Monte-Carlo Masters takes place next week
