What a difference a day makes...

Things change fast in sport.

We saw an example of that yesterday, with a couple of results in the WTA New Haven event having a huge impact on the tournament Outright Winner market...

The 3rd seed Petra Kvitova, 4th seed Kristina Mladenovic and 5th seed Elena Vesnina were all knocked out in their opening matches.

Kvitova had been the 4/1 favourite for the New Haven trophy.

Losing the big names and tournament favourites is good news for our more speculative ‘Ones to Watch’ picks...

In the top half of the New Haven draw, this week’s 80/1 selection Kirsten Flipkens won her opening match 6-2, 6-3, and is now a best price 40/1 and as short as 20/1.

Flipkens’ next opponent will be Vesnina’s conqueror, Ana Bogdan. Flipkens leads the head-to-head v Bogdan 1-0, and is a 1/2 (1.50) match favourite to beat the Romanian on Wednesday and book a place in the quarter finals.

In the bottom half of the draw, our 20/1 pick Carla Suarez Navarro has been cut to 12/1 without hitting a ball; the price cut coming due to Kvitova’s early exit.

Suarez Navarro plays her first match today (5pm on BT Sport). She takes on Jana Cepelova, and as we noted in Monday’s email, the Spaniard won their only previous meeting – a straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 win on hard courts at the Australian Open earlier this year.

  • We’ve got early Each Way value on our side in both cases – 80/1 Flipkens now 40/1 at best, and 20/1 Suarez Navarro now 12/1. And with the favourite Kvitova gone, the draw looks even more ‘wide open’ (that phrase again) than it already did
  • In this week’s Men’s event, our 33/1 pick Viktor Troicki gets underway in the ATP Winston Salem tournament later today

Significant developments ahead of the US Open...

Injuries to star players have dominated the tennis news in recent weeks.

Roger Federer and Andy Murray pulled out of big Masters events in a bid to get fit for the US Open next week...

While Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka (last year’s US Open finalists) are both confirmed to miss New York and the rest of the 2017 season...

That’s four of the Men’s Top 5 players I’ve mentioned there – and all of them former US Open winners.

In the Women’s game, it’s not just injury that is keeping the big names away from Flushing Meadows...

Serena Williams is pregnant and won’t return to the tour until next year. While Victoria Azarenka (who returned to the tour in June, six months after giving birth) announced on Monday that she will miss the US Open too – due to a legal battle regarding custody of her child.

One woman who will be there – fitness permitting of course – is Maria Sharapova. The Russian returned from suspension this summer and has been granted a Wild Card for the US Open. That means she won’t be seeded so will have to work her way through the draw, the hard way.

All in all it’s a fascinating backdrop to the US Open...

The sponsors and promoters won’t like having so many household names missing.

But I’m loving it – both the Men’s and Women’s events are looking wide open; somebody WILL break through the draw and make a name for themselves in New York.

We’ll be on the hunt to find them – and at attractive odds, too...

Tomorrow – your free US Open Ones to Watch report...

I’ll be back tomorrow evening (Wednesday) with your free US Open 2017 – Ones to Watch report. Naming my initial list of big-price outsiders to follow in the final Grand Slam of the year...

Your FREE report will be the first stage of my US Open coverage...

My dedicated, members-only daily services have produced a profit at all three Grand Slams so far this year. And last year we landed an Each Way payout from 33/1 shot Karolina Pliskova (who is now World No.1) in the US Open final. I’ll also be in touch very soon with details of how you can get onboard my exclusive daily service for the full US Open fortnight.

See you tomorrow...

Best wishes,

Tom Wilson
