US Open – One to Watch at 66/1...
Wednesday 7th August 2019
In your Ones to Watch EXTRA email today:
Big Apple ripe for an outsider...
We’re continuing our build-up to the US Open today by getting a fast-rising young player in the book at odds of 66/1.
In recent years the women’s US Open has proved particularly fruitful for the outsiders...
In 2015, Flavia Pennetta lifted the US Open trophy as a 200/1 underdog.
In 2016, our 33/1 pick Karolina Pliskova came runner-up.
In 2017, our 40/1 One to Watch Sloane Stephens found glory at Flushing Meadows.
In 2018, Naomi Osaka won big in New York at 50/1.
All three of those winners had never won a Grand Slam tournament before.
Overall, 10 of the last 12 Women’s Grand Slams have seen winners at double-figure odds or bigger (10/1+).
Back the youngsters...
There have been nine different trophy winners in the last 11 Slams. Six of those women were first-time Major winners.
We should have no fear at all in backing a couple of youngsters to get their first taste of Grand Slam success at the US Open this summer...
As far back as September last year, we flagged up teenager Amanda Anisimova as One to Watch at big prices for the US Open 2019. Today we’re adding another exciting young American prospect...
Kenin @ 66/1...
Sofia Kenin is having a breakthrough season. So far in 2019, the 20-year-old has moved into the Top 30 in the world rankings and won her first two titles on the WTA Tour.
In January, the American right-hander won Hobart on hard courts as an 18/1 shot. In February, she finished a 16/1 runner-up on hard courts in Acapulco. Then in July, Kenin won Mallorca on grass at 20/1.
‘Sonya’ – as she is known – is a tough cookie. She plays to win. She doesn’t bother much with handshakes or eye contact with opponents or umpires at the end of matches. She’s all business.
Kenin showed her ability to tough it out in the Mallorca final, saving match points before fighting back to win the trophy.
At the French Open on clay this year, Sonya posted her best result yet at a Grand Slam. Reaching the 4th Round – one match off the quarter finals – only beaten in a close three-set battle by eventual Roland Garros winner and current World No.1, Ashleigh Barty.
Hard courts are Sonya’s best surface. So far in her young career, 100 of her 181 match wins have come at hard court venues. The Flushing Meadow courts in New York should fit well with her.
Kenin looks to have a taste for the big-time. She relishes the chance to take on the big names. Since the start of June, Sofia has beaten both Serena Williams (at the French Open) and Ashleigh Barty. The latter of those big wins came just this week, with Kenin taking out the No.1 in Toronto at the prestigious Rogers Cup.
This is a player on the up and set for more big wins. I believe Kenin has the attacking game and mental aptitude to land Major trophies. Odds of 66/1 Each Way mark her out as One to Watch for the US Open.
Each Way terms: 1/2 odds 1-2 places
The US Open starts on 26th August. I’ll be in touch throughout the month with more info and bet advice, as we get ready for the big event in New York.
Enjoy the tennis...
Best wishes,
