Price Watch: it’s good to have the tennis back…

My big-price, back-the-outsiders approach has plenty of reasoning behind it. After this month’s first three tournaments back on the WTA Tour, my revised figures for the 2020 season to date (ATP, WTA & Grand Slams combined) are showing that:

  • 16 of 32 tournaments have produced a 10/1+ winner (50%)
  • 13 tournaments have seen a 50/1+ finalist (41%)

And across those 32 tournaments:

  • 45 of the 64 finalists have been at odds of 10/1+ (70%)

With Each Way bets in the Outright Winner market generally offering half the odds for reaching the final, there really is plenty of scope for rooting out underdogs worth following in these events.

One of those 2020 tournament winners, of course, was Sofia Kenin. A 50/1 shot at the Australian Open in January, Kenin was one of the 10 names on our Ones to Watch in 2020 list…

  • With the tours back this month and a new, late summer & autumn schedule to look forward to, now would be a good time to refamiliarize yourself with the players in that 2020 season report. View the Ones to Watch list in full here

Here are the results & per-tournament prices from the three WTA events since play resumed at the start of August:

WTA Lexington
Winner: J.Brady (12/1)
Runner-up: J.B.Teichmann (66/1)

WTA Prague
Winner: S.Halep (7/4)
Runner-up: E.Mertens (14/1)

WTA Palermo
Winner: F.Ferro (25/1)
Runner-up: A.Kontaveit (12/1)

  • That’s five out of six finalists at odds of 12/1 or bigger. Only one winning favourite (Halep). A standout 25/1 winner (Ferro). And a 66/1 runner-up (Teichmann)

Here’s a big-price stat to keep in mind…

Swiss player Jil Belen Teichmann has now reached three WTA finals in her career, all coming since last April. The 23-year-old has delivered at big prices on each occasion. Winning titles in 2019 at odds of 50/1 and 40/1. Then finishing runner-up in Lexington, USA last week at 66/1.

New ATP schedule released…

After so much bad news in recent months, it was a welcome surprise to see last week’s press release from the ATP Tour.

The men’s tournament calendar is now looking much rosier than we could have hoped for even just a few weeks ago. With 13 events confirmed on the updated 2020 schedule.

That includes two Grand Slams, the US Open and French Open. Along with the Paris Masters, end-of-season finals in London, and events at various venues across Europe this autumn.

That means there will be plenty of matches and Outright Winner markets for us to peruse in the weeks and months to come, between now and November...

Next stop, New York…

The next event on the calendar begins later this week. The Western & Southern Open starts on Friday 21st August, featuring both men & women. This tournament has been moved from its traditional Cincinnati slot to New York, where it will act as a key warm-up event for the US Open which follows on 31st August.

Enjoy the tennis…

Best wishes,
