Notes from the Tour: The bumpy road to New York...
Thursday 21st August 2025
The last couple of weeks have shown us the highs and lows of playing the tennis Outright Winner markets…
Ones to Watch members enjoyed a 28/1 winner in Montreal, with 18-year-old Victoria Mboko bursting through the draw to her maiden WTA title. The Canadian teenager saved a match point along the way, once again demonstrating the tightrope-walking, sliding-doors nature of the sport…
That big winner has been followed by a couple of bruising losses for our picks - part and parcel of our long-odds approach to tournament betting, but still galling when they come like this…
First of all, our 200/1 selection McCartney Kessler blew two match points in Cincinnati…
Followed this week by 100/1 Renata Zarazua conspiring to somehow expand on the same painful trick - denied five match points in Monterrey…
Swings and roundabouts…
But the key is to be on the big prices in the first place…
So far this season, we’ve had three winning tournament bets in the Ones to Watch service - and all three of them saved match points at various stages en-route to reaching the final and eventually taking the trophy:
We’ll be going for more big Each Way prices in New York over the next fortnight, starting from this weekend - with the US Open getting underway on Sunday…
In fact, I’ve already put up one 100/1 Ones to Watch youngster for the big trip to the Big Apple. With more to come very soon: the next members-only email & advice is going out tomorrow afternoon (Friday)...
P.S
Talking of ups and downs on the road to New York, here are a couple of players appearing in my notes and thoughts this week, for various reasons…
Botic Van De Zandschulp is continuing his mission to win a first ATP Tour title. The 29-year-old Dutchman is through to the quarter finals in Winston-Salem this week. Having come oh-so-close at the ATP Munich final in 2023, where he lost from a winning position including having two match points for the trophy, Botic is looking to shake off the tag of nearly-man…
What’s happening with Emma Navarro? Last summer’s maiden US Open semi-finalist has dropped out of the world’s Top 10, and since Wimbledon, she’s lost four out of five matches on North American hard courts. Not ideal preparation for the upcoming Grand Slam in New York. Maybe the people at Ladbrokes & Coral know something… those firms are out to 150/1 for Navarro to win the US Open. Or maybe the guys at Bet365 and William Hill know something else? They have Emma at just 33/1…
One thing’s for sure: I’ll be closely monitoring the markets, as we head into the US Open this weekend…
Enjoy the tennis…
Best wishes,

Oliver Upstone
