Welcome to your new free tennis email, Ones to Watch EXTRA

These are exciting times at Tom’s Tennis HQ, and your new free email from me will be packed with useful moneymaking tennis stats & info every week. The ‘Extra’ bit is new in the name, replacing your previous free ‘Ones to Watch’ emails from me.

Here’s what’s in store…

Ones to Watch EXTRA – free weekly email and annual reports…

Once a week you’ll get my updates on the latest player form, tournament winners & prices…

PLUS dedicated free ‘Ones to Watch Reports’ throughout the season – listing young, improving or little-known players that can make you money in the Grand Slams and on the weekly ATP & WTA Tours throughout the season.

Reports just like our free list of 10 young players to watch in 2018, which has already seen Andrey Rublev make the ATP Doha final at 16/1 – and 500/1 Hyeon Chung beat Novak Djokovic and reach the Australian Open semi finals last week. View that full list of 10 players here.

Price Watch – Cilic the pick of the bunch in Melbourne…

My ‘Ones to Watch’ mentality is to look out in particular for players at double-figure prices in the Outright Winner markets.

Last season 59% of all finalists went off at double-figure prices, with players lifting trophies at odds including 80/1, 100/1 and even 250/1. It was a similar story in 2016 with 55% of finalists at double-figure prices.

With that in mind, you can see why I like to look beyond the favourites and short prices.

So far in 2018 the pattern has continued, with 14 out of 24 finalists at double-figure prices (58%). Check out the Calendar here. Including two of the four finalists at the first Grand Slam of the year, in Australia:

Australian Open
Men's Winner: R.Federer (2/1)
Men's Runner-up: M.Cilic (33/1)
Women's Winner: C.Wozniacki (10/1)
Women's Runner-up: S.Halep (8/1)

Marin Cilic was the big one there, and he featured in my new, full members-only Ones to Watch service – we backed Cilic at 30/1 or 28/1 Each Way after the 2nd Round.

If you’re not on my new service yet, come onboard now for a free test drive. This week we’re looking at the WTA Taipei and WTA St Petersburg events, and next week the men return with three ATP tournaments in Sofia, Montpellier and Quito…

Form Watch – 15-match losing streak comes to an end…

When it comes to following the form and flagging up players to follow in your new Ones to Watch EXTRA service, we won’t just be looking at players on winning streaks. Sometimes a losing streak catches the eye, and a turnaround in form can prove significant…

A special nod today goes to Kristina Mladenovic

This time last year, the young Frenchwoman was competing in St Petersburg, on the way to her first ever WTA tournament win. Mladenovic took the title at 50/1, and made three more finals after that in Acapulco, Stuttgart and Madrid. She was on for a career-best season, cracking the Top 10 in the world rankings.

However, after a quarter final run at the French Open, it all went downhill…

Mladenovic failed to win more than two matches in a row for the rest of the summer, and after Wimbledon she inadvertently embarked on a demoralising losing streak that stretched to 15 matches – up to and including a 1st Round loss at the Australian Open 2018.

This week though, back in Russia to defend her St Petersburg title, there was finally some good news…

Mladenovic beat Dominika Cibulkova 6-4, 6-4 today – bringing to an end a six-month wait for a match win on the tour.

The World No.10 was a 12/5 (3.40) underdog for that match, and she’ll be an outsider in the betting again on Friday against our friend Katerina Siniakova.

A dream repeat of last year’s St Petersburg trophy win might be beyond her at the moment. One swallow does not a summer make. But confidence is a funny thing and I’d expect to see Mladenovic’s match results start to improve somewhat in the weeks ahead.

We’ll keep an eye on her progress.

  • Another note on Mladenovic… she has had plenty of success playing Doubles– most recently winning the Women’s Doubles title with Timea Babos at the Australian Open last weekend. She has honed some great net skills on the Doubles court and is one to look out for in Doubles matches, too

I’ll be back next week with your next free, Ones to Watch EXTRA email.

Enjoy the tennis…
