Aussie Open underway…

The first Grand Slam of the year is up and running, and for me that means one thing in particular:

I become nocturnal.

As the rain lashed the window last night (or was it this morning…), I watched the first batch of 1st Round matches unfold on my screen.

Last summer I had the pleasure of visiting Wimbledon. No trip to Melbourne at the moment though…

100/1 update…

Coffee in hand, here’s a little update on our five big-priced outsiders from last week’s free Australian Open 2018 – Ones to Watch report.

On the eve of the tournament all were around the 100/1 mark. If one or two or these have a good run over the next week or two, we’ll be doing good…

  • Andrey Rublev – made hard work of his 1st Round match, but the 20-year-old Russian led for most of his almost-four-hours against the battling 35-year-old David Ferrer, eventually getting through 6-2 in the 5th & final set. Next up for this exciting young player, another veteran – Marcos Baghdatis…
  • Roberto Bautista-Agut – hits the ground running, having won the ATP Auckland title at 9/1 on Saturday. The Spaniard has seen the biggest Aussie Open price cut of our five players since our report came out. He starts his campaign tonight, and is a dark horse in the 3rd quarter of the Men’s draw – where Novak Djokovic is the leading name but also on elbow ‘injury watch’…
  • Anastasija Sevastova – plays in the 1st Round tonight. Should she win, we could be in for a rematch with Maria Sharapova in the next round – Sevastova knocked Maria out of the US Open last year…
  • Katerina Siniakova – our friend Siniakova (already a 20/1 winner and 22/1 finalist for us in the last six months) got through a tight opening match by 2 sets to 1 last night. She will be the underdog against Elina Svitolina in the 2nd Round but that match could go close, and should be good to watch. Svitolina can get a little nervy on her second serve…
  • Daria Gavrilova – the one Australian representative on our list and she got home billing as the last match on the main court on day one. Dasha was a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 winner there; much tougher challenges lie ahead, but as I said in our pre-tournament report Gavrilova is a momentum player who could get something going in Melbourne. She’s been one set off the quarter finals two years running…

Price watch…

Talking of big prices, the ‘double-figure odds’ theme continued last week with no fewer than six of the eight finalists in the four ATP & WTA events going off at pre-tournament prices of 10/1+…

That included a 20/1 title winner and 25/1 and 33/1 runners-up. View the full calendar & price list here.

And remember, over half of finalists in the whole of last year AND the year before were at double-figure prices. That’s why we concentrate on those kind of players & prices on our Ones to Watch lists.

Oh, and the Aussie Open had a 100/1 finalist last year and a 50/1 winner the year before…

Enjoy the tennis.
