Our two to watch in the quarter finals…

Greetings from Wimbledon…

Week two is upon us with the quarter finals taking place today (Women’s) and tomorrow (Men’s).

So far it’s been boiling up to be a fantastic tournament – as demonstrated last night with a classic match that saw World No.2 Rafael Nadal knocked out by 5/1 match outsider Gilles Muller, who is ranked 26th in the world, in a five-set epic that took almost five hours. Glorious stuff.

And of course, for us and our ‘Ones to Watch’ angle of sniffing out the bigger-priced players in the Outright Winner markets (and looking beyond the ‘obvious’ names in the lists of short-price favourites) – an upset like Rafa going out is right up our street…

That certainly makes things interesting in the Men’s draw, with our 28/1 Ones to Watch pick Marin Cilic now set to face Nadal’s conqueror Muller in the quarter finals.

With Nadal removed from the Croatian’s path, Cilic could be on a collision course for a semi final with Andy Murray (who plays Sam Querrey).

Cilic has been very impressive so far – you can’t do much better than winning all of your four matches in straight sets, 3-0. He’s ranked 4th in the tournament for Most Aces so far, but is so much more than a big server. As shown by the fact that Cilic is ranked 2nd for Most 1st Serve Receiving Points Won, which means he is returning brilliantly as well as serving great.

  • Cilic was 28/1 (29.00) when flagged up as a big-price Each Way prospect in your free pre-tournament Wimbledon 2017 Ones to Watch report. He’s now 7/1 (8.00) at best

In the Women’s event, we’ve also seen some of the shocks & surprises that we were anticipating...

Remember, already in the Grand Slams this year we’ve seen 100/1 Venus Williams finish runner-up at the Australian Open, and 100/1 Jelena Ostapenko (who was in our pre-season Ones to Watch in 2017 report) win the French Open.

Last week at Wimbledon, tournament favourites Petra Kvitova and Karolina Pliskova were both knocked out in the 2nd Round. And with Serena Williams already out for the season, an already wide open looking Women’s draw has become even more intriguing…

From our point of view, Coco Vandeweghe is the player flying the Ones to Watch flag. Like Cilic, she has won four out of four matches in straight sets so far, 2-0.

We originally put Coco in the notebook for Wimbledon back in January at 25/1, and then followed up on that at 20/1 in our report before the tournament. The American is ranked 2nd for Highest Percentage of 1st Serve Points Won so far (85%), and is looking confident and fired up – which is again, like Cilic.

Vandeweghe plays in the quarter finals this afternoon and the bookies make her the favourite to beat Magdalena Rybarikova.

  • Vandeweghe was 20/1 (21.00) when flagged up as a big-price Each Way prospect in your free pre-tournament Wimbledon 2017 Ones to Watch report. She’s now 9/2 (5.50)

Next week – back around the world on tour…

Let’s see if Cilic and Coco can continue their exciting progress at SW19 this week.

Then, after the dust has settled at Wimbledon, we’ll be right back into the weekly ATP and WTA Tour events next week and throughout the summer…

Things get back in the swing next week with an international mix of Men’s and Women’s tournaments taking in the USA, Croatia, Sweden, Switzerland and Romania.

I’ll be back next week.

Enjoy the tennis…

Best wishes,

Tom Wilson
