The 100/1 Club - and golden nuggets for The Open...

Tuesday 12th July 2022

Good morning. This week’s free edition of Ones to Watch EXTRA takes us from Wimbledon to New York – via St Andrews…

So close!

Last time you heard from me, we were waiting on our 40/1 early-pick Ons Jabeur in the Wimbledon women’s semi finals (view last week’s update here).

As you probably know by now, Jabeur got all the way to the championship match, but was just pipped to the title on Saturday. With Elena Rybakina coming from a set down to beat our lady in the final, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

No 40/1 glory there, then. But with the bookies paying 1/2 odds for reaching the final, hopefully you got a decent payout from Jabeur by backing our player Each Way back in April? Let me know by dropping me a line at: tom.wilson@oxonpress.co.uk

The 100/1 Club gains another member…

We were so close to landing a big one there. And when you look at this list of recent Women’s Grand Slam finalists – including new Wimbledon champion Rybakina at 100/1. Then you can see why I focus on big-odds outsiders and youngsters with my Ones to Watch selections…

Look at this incredible stack of recent giant-odds outcomes and first-time winners in the women’s Slams:

  • The last 11 Wimbledon Women’s titles have been won by 8 different players

Maiden winners – since 2015:

  • 15 of the last 27 Women’s Grand Slams have been won by players lifting a Major trophy for the first time

Since the Australian Open 2017, when Serena Williams last won a Major title:

  • The last 22 Women's Grand Slams have produced 15 different winners

Since the start of 2020:

  • 8 of the last 10 Women’s Grand Slams have produced at least one finalist at day-one odds of 33/1+. Including 7 players at 100/1+

Just look at this list…

And here’s the real takeaway stat. This is just remarkable:

  • The last 8 women’s Grand Slam finals have featured 7 players at odds of 100/1+. With 4 of them winning the trophy

Wow. This sport really is wide open. This is why we go after such big odds….

Here’s that seven-lady list:

French Open 2020 – Iga Swiatek 100/1 (winner)

French Open 2021 – Barbora Krejcikova 175/1 (winner)

French Open 2021- Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 150/1 (runner-up)

US Open 2021 – Emma Raducanu 100/1 (winner)

US Open 2021 – Leylah Fernandez 200/1+ (runner-up)

Australian Open 2022 – Danielle Collins 100/1 (runner-up)

Wimbledon 2022 – Elena Rybakina 100/1 (winner)

All seven of those players were first-time Major finalists. Incredible stuff. And the way the women’s game is right now, this carnage is showing no sign of slowing down…

Don’t miss the next one…

Wimbledon is over for another year, but the ATP & WTA Tours continue throughout the summer, including this week and next week. With a total of 13 tournaments taking place between now and the end of July – and then on into the autumn.

And the next Grand Slam, the US Open in New York, is coming up at the end of August…

Norrie already in the book…

Right back in February, I emailed Ones to Watch EXTRA readers with another of my early-bird picks. With Cameron Norrie put up as a big-price selection for the men’s US Open 2022. Read that original article here. At the time, Norrie was available at a standout 100/1, with 66/1, 50/1 & 40/1 also available.

Having reached a debut Grand Slam semi final at Wimbledon last week, Cam is showing that he has the taste – and the game – for the big stage…

If you’re not on Norrie for the US Open yet, you can still get involved today. While Boylesports are now as short as 20/1 for Cam to land a maiden Major in New York. He can still be backed at a very acceptable 50/1 as I write with Bet365 and Betfred. And 40/1 at William Hill, Paddy Power & Betfair Sportsbook. With Each Way terms of 1/2 odds, 1-2 places.

Now for that detour to Scotland, and the famous Old Course of St Andrews…

Golden nuggets for The Open…

I’m a tennis man. But I also like to dip my oar into a few other sports from time to time. Especially for the big events. And in golf, they don’t come much bigger than The Open Championship

The last Major of the year tees off at St Andrews on Thursday morning. The two men I’m going for this week are Cameron Smith at 28/1, and Matthew Fitzpatrick at 20/1.

Smith posted a credible (Tied) Top 10 finish at the Scottish Open last week. That was the Australian’s best result since an impressive T3 finish at The Masters at Augusta in April. Last week’s performance in Scotland shows a decent bit of links form, just at the right time. One nugget of info I saw online yesterday is that Cameron is ranked 2nd in the field for this week’s Open for ‘wind’ scores in his last 24 rounds. Which, heatwave or not, might come in handy up on the coast this weekend. Here’s another interesting stat: world no.6 Smith is the highest-ranked player yet to win a Major.

Fitzpatrick is an Englishman that I’ve been following for a while. Matt is having a fantastic year, and there could be more to come. He finished in the Each Way betting places at the US PGA Championship in May (T5). Then won a maiden Major, taking the title at the US Open last month. That win came at the Brookline course; the same venue where Fitzpatrick had won as a Junior. Which leads us to another intriguing ‘nugget’ for The Open this week… Matt also won here at St Andrews as a Junior, back in 2008. That sounds like a great omen to me.

  • Cameron Smith is 28/1, with William Hill offering the best Each Way terms at that price, 9 places at 1/5 odds. Bet365 are 8 places. Betway have 12 places, with Smith at 22/1
  • Matthew Fitzpatrick is 20/1 with William Hill and Bet365. Betway are 16/1
