Tonight – 40/1 Sock in quarter final action...
Miami proved one tournament too many for the in-form Kristina Mladenovic. But our 40/1 Ones to Watch pick in the Men’s has been doing much better...
Jack Sock – flagged up at 40/1 and 33/1 Each Way last week – has successfully made his way through three rounds in Florida. He now finds himself 16/1 at best, and playing in the quarter finals tonight (2am UK time – live on Sky Sports)...
That’s the good news.
The ‘bad news’ is that our attractively priced outsider is up against legend of the game, Rafael Nadal.
However, I’m ever the optimist. Anything can happen in sport. And match odds of 5/2 (3.50) for Sock suggest the bookies don’t expect a trouncing tonight.
Indeed, Nadal has won their two previous meetings, both back in 2015. But on both occasions, the younger man – and current American No.1 – Sock was competitive enough to take a set off Rafa.
And right now, early in 2017, Sock is definitely a stronger player than he was then. This has been the best start to a season of his career so far, including two trophy wins.
The 24-year-old American is up to a career-high ranking of No.17 in the world.
And with his exploits here in Miami, Sock has now reached the quarter finals (at least) in each of his last four Masters event appearances. And Masters tournaments are second only to the Grand Slams in terms of prestige.
Oh, and while I’m piling on the positives – Nadal has never won the Miami title...
I’ll be back next week with more Ones to Watch picks for us.
Until then, enjoy the tennis in Miami...
Best wishes,
