Indian Wells in the spotlight this week...
Monday 6th March 2017
In your Ones to Watch email today:
Back from my travels, I spent this morning catching up on the recent tournament prices. There were certainly some big odds churned out while I was away...
66/1... 125/1... 250/1...
While my 20/1 shot in Rio self-destructed (Fabio Fognini beat himself, throwing his racket around like a stroppy kid). There was a good result for one of our 2017 Ones to Watch, with Elina Svitolina winning a prestigious title in Dubai, at odds of 10/1.
That was Svitolina’s second WTA title of the season.
And elsewhere in the last couple of weeks, the ATP and WTA Tours have seen finalists at odds up to 66/1, 125/1 and even 250/1.
Check out my up-to-date list of tournaments and prices here.
The Outright Winner markets are peppered with big prices like that, all season long. The favourites don’t win every week. There will be plenty more weekly ‘Ones to Watch’ opportunities for us coming up soon. I’ll be looking to build on our 12/1 winner from last month.
Indian Wells in the spotlight this week...
The first Masters 1000 (ATP) and Premier Mandatory (WTA) tournament of the season starts later this week...
The BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells has a legitimate claim to be called the ‘fifth Major’ on the calendar, seeing at is boasts some of the highest attendances at any event – and the second largest capacity centre court in the world.
The Men’s ATP event sees 46 of the Top 50 players in the hat, with a similarly strong line-up expected in the Women’s WTA draw.
A look at the names engraved on the trophy suggests this huge tournament might not be the most obvious hunting ground for a big-price ‘Ones to Watch’ bet... Masters 1000 events have been dominated by the Big Four over the last decade with Djokovic, Murray, Nadal and Federer accounting for 71 of 81 trophy wins since 2008.
Djokovic has won the Indian Wells title three years running.
We saw Djokovic beaten by a 3/1 match underdog last week though (Nick Kyrgios), and Federer lost to a 12/1 outsider (Evgeny Donskoy) – so nothing is set in stone. Plus, the Women’s tour is always prone to serving up some upsets and big prices, and betting Each Way gives us the chance to profit from surprise finalists and runners-up, too...
Coming up...
The Indian Wells markets aren’t up yet. But I’ll be looking at the Outright Winner prices and highlighting any Ones to Watch for us, on Wednesday or Thursday...
P.S
Next week sees one of the biggest betting events of the year, the Cheltenham Festival...
My colleague, racing analyst Nick Pullen will be running a dedicated daily Cheltenham service again this year – and after a 25/1 winner for his followers just last week, Nick is a man worth listening to.
Lookout for an email later this week, with details of how YOU can get hold of Nick’s unique Cheltenham advice...
Best wishes,
