Looking for the breakthrough…

Over in New York the US Open is at the semi final stage. On my members-only daily service we’re rooting for Belinda Bencic to reach a first Grand Slam final…

At the start of the year we highlighted Bencic’s chances for a big win this season.

The 22-year-old from Switzerland is one of three young women looking to make the big breakthrough at Flushing Meadows this evening. The other are 24-year-old Elina Svitolina and 19-year-old Bianca Andreescu.

Svitolina takes on 23-time Major winner Serena Williams. Bencic plays Andreescu.

One to Watch for the Australian Open 2020…

The progress being made by these players is not going unnoticed by the oddsmakers. A win tonight – and a trophy held aloft come Saturday – would see a price rush for whoever wins the US Open title.

The raid will come on the early 2020 Grand Slam markets.

In particular, the Australian Open in January which is not only the first Slam of the calendar year, but also the only one besides New York to be played on hard courts.

As it stands, the bookies have these prices for Melbourne in January:

  • Serena Williams 5/1 favourite
  • Bianca Andreescu 14/1 best, 7/1 shortest
  • Elina Svitolina 20/1 best, 14/1 general, as short as 9/1
  • Belinda Bencic 50/1 best, 12/1 shortest

The Bencic price sticks out like a sore thumb. At 50/1 and 40/1, the Swiss player is an eye-catcher…

Three of Belinda’s four WTA titles to date have been won on hard courts. And she’s started the season well in the last couple of years, lifting the Hopman Cup (international mixed team cup competition) alongside Roger Federer. That format is set to change next January, but whatever happens – barring injury – Bencic should be considered a serious contender for the Aussie Open.

In comparison to the 50/1 available with Ladbrokes & Coral, other firms are going much shorter for Bencic in the first Slam of next season. Bet365 are 16/1, Boylesports are just 12/1.

Win or not in America tonight, Bencic at big prices goes down as an early One to Watch for the Australian Open 2020

The women’s US Open semi finals start at Midnight tonight. If Bencic does well, then that Aussie Open price is likely to go fast.
