Monte Carlo update - did you see this shot?!
Wednesday 12th April 2023
Good morning. I appreciate that not everyone who reads this column is as much of a ‘tennis nut’ as me. But as a pure fan, I just have to point you towards some of the play in yesterday’s match between Ugo Humbert and Lorenzo Sonego. It really was exciting to watch…
Sonego is one of our Ones to Watch outsider picks for the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters this week (150/1). The Italian came from behind on Tuesday to beat Humbert - saving no fewer than four match points, all on his opponent’s serve. And in quite spectacular fashion…
A couple of them were bad errors from the Frenchman. But in other instances, Lorenzo pulled out some last-ditch tennis magic. The crowd loved it, and were noisily rooting for the Italian.
Check out one of those match-point-saving shots here, on the ATP Tour website:

Or if you’re a real hardcore tennis follower, you can watch a replay of the whole match on Amazon Prime Video, who are showing all the matches this week. The last half-hour or so of Humbert v Sonego was particularly fun to watch.
ATP Monte Carlo continues today from 10am….
All four of our Outright Winner, Each Way picks are in action:
Sonego is the underdog against world no.5 Daniil Medvedev. This is the Russian’s first match on clay since the French Open last May, though. Our man Sonego is a decent outsider to have on your side - he can blow hot or cold, but will certainly be up for the fight. And maybe yesterday’s great escape has lit a fire in him.
Our other long-odds outsider this week is Jiri Lehecka (80/1). The promising young Czech won 2-0 in the 1st Round on Tuesday, and takes on the experienced Grigor Dimitrov today. The bookies make that one 50-50.
And our two 10/1+ picks are also out on court today. Another Italian, Jannik Sinner. And Norway’s Casper Ruud…
If you didn’t get a chance to back our players yesterday, then Bet365 is the best place to go first thing this morning - now offering 12/1 each for Sinner and Ruud. And sticking with the best Each Way place terms of 1/2 odds for 1-2 places.
The likes of Betfred, Boylesports, 10Bet & LiveScoreBet have now jumped ship and joined the majority of firms with the reduced 1/3 odds place terms this morning. Hopefully you managed to bag the best prices when they were 1/2 odds Monday night & yesterday morning.
Unibet and Betway don’t often do much to warrant praise. But both are also still offering the recommended 1/2 odds Each Way terms as I write, first thing this morning.
The Outright markets will go down for the day when play starts at 10am, UK time.
Enjoy the tennis…
Best wishes,
Tom Wilson
