Match-point magic - and Monte-Carlo tonight...

Monday 7th April 2025

With our fourth finalist of the year, our strong start to the season continues…

Jenson Brooksby’s trophy win in Houston last night was an especially pleasing one, for a number of reasons…

Firstly, it feels good to be on a player ranked right down at no.507 in the world, and to successfully back them the week that they win the first title of their career. As was the case with our 12/1 Each Way pick Brooksby last week. The 24-year-old American now makes a massive 335-place leap to no.172 in today’s new ATP rankings.

Secondly, Jenson had a wild week of it in Texas. Before we even backed him, he’d saved a match point in qualifying - having only been entered into the event via a wildcard from the Houston organisers. After we got on Brooksby last Wednesday, he then saved three match points in the next round… and then fought off another match point when taking out top seed Tommy Paul in the semi finals.

As well as all the hours of research and analysis, we also need a bit of luck along the way with our picks. Although having watched Brooksby throughout last week’s run, I have to give him immense credit for the way he played those match points. He won them. He attacked. He was brave. That’s what we like to see.

  • In January, our big Australian Open winner Madison Keys also saved a match point in the semi finals. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Betting - and top-level sport - can be a game of very small margins

Thirdly for Jenson Brooksby, it was great to see the young man with a smile on his face. As his beaten opponent Frances Tiafoe acknowledged straight after the match during the trophy ceremony, Brooksby has been through a lot over the last couple of years. Not least multiple injuries, including wrist surgery.

I think this social media post says it all:

Thanks to Ones to Watch member Steve L, who emailed in his winning story last night…

“Congratulations on your selection of Jenson Brooksby. I had a small each-way bet at 11-1 with Bet365 which ensured another profit for this week. Following on from Keys and Pegula it's good to know that at least some Americans still look after us. Best wishes, Steve”

Monte-Carlo tonight…

This week we’re in Monte-Carlo for the first clay-court ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the year…

Play is underway in the 1st round as I write. The action starts from 10am, UK time. Which makes it tricky for me to get my tournament picks to you during normal/ sociable hours (bookies take down the Outright Winner market during each day’s matches).

I’m doing my research and notes today. All being well, I’ll be able to send you the Each Way advice for Monte-Carlo tonight. Check your inbox.

See you tonight…
