On the comeback trail in California at 20/1...
Tuesday 3rd August 2021
In Ones to Watch today:
The eight-hour time difference between the UK and California meant there was a bit of waiting around today before we could get a glimpse of the bookies’ updated, day two Outright Winner markets for this week’s WTA San Jose event.
The odds are up now though, and plays resumes at 6pm (UK time). So, I’ll be brief with my recommendation today…
Yastremska getting back to business…
Last month, we said we’d keep an eye on the progress of Dayana Yastremska. Having been cleared of any wrongdoing after a doping investigation, the 21-year-old Ukrainian returned to the tour at WTA Hamburg in July. She reached the semi final, having gone off at 9/1 or shorter.
This week, Yastremska is on the North American hard courts in San Jose, and she certainly has the power and pace of shot to go well in these conditions. Odds of 20/1 Each Way appeal.
Dayana is a 4/7 (1.57) favourite to beat America’s Claire Liu this evening (9pm+). If she gets through that test, then this feisty competitor won’t fear taking on one of the tournament favourites, Elena Rybakina…
The 22-year-old Russian-born Kazakhstan representative has had a good summer – but also a busy one. Rybakina reached the quarter finals at the French Open, semi finals at Eastbourne, 4th round at Wimbledon, and then the semis at the Olympics – losing the bronze-medal match to finish 4th in the competition. That schedule might catch up with her for a bit this month, before attention turns to the next Grand Slam, at the US Open in New York.
Rybakina is 13/2 (7.5) and 6/1 (7.0) to win this tournament. I much prefer to get behind Yastremska on the comeback, with odds of 20/1 bigger than what we’d see if she hadn’t been off the tour for so long in recent times.
Odds of 1/2+ (1.5+) are also just about enough for me to back Dayana as a match single today, too, against the lower-ranked Liu.
