Ones to Watch this week – at 20/1 and 50/1...
Monday 24th February 2020
In your Ones to Watch email today:
Garin wins in Rio…
We’ve had a good start to the season with our Ones to Watch picks. That continued last night with our 10/1 pick Cristian Garin lifting the title in Rio de Janeiro.
That’s the second clay-court title in a row for the 23-year-old Chilean. The race is now on for Garin to get fit and ready for this week’s ‘home’ event in Chile...
The new World No.18 is the 4/1 favourite for the inaugural ATP Santiago title. After the Rio final, Garin said he had some pain in his back but was hoping to be able to play in front of his home crowd. At short odds, we’ll leave him this week – but Garin is very much one to follow on clay this year.
Ones to Watch this week, Part 2...
Last night’s ‘Sunday Night Club’ email got us on Roberto Bautista-Agut for ATP Dubai at 14/1. You can catch up on that email here. The Dubai Outright Winner market will go back up at the end of play today.
There are four other tournaments on the schedule this week. Today we’re looking at the events in Santiago and Acapulco, where play starts at 4pm and 10pm respectively...
20/1 and 50/1 shots...
There’s scope to go after a couple of big ones this week.
In ATP Santiago (ATP 250 grade event, clay), the volatile left-hander Martin Klizan could put a run together at 33/1...
Klizan is hard to catch right, but four of his six career titles have been won on clay. And the 30-year-old Slovakian showed he might be in form and fit right now, having come through qualifying over the weekend with a brace of 2-0 wins. He’s a momentum player, and can really whip his serve & forehand when on song.
At big prices, Klizan is worth following an outsider in this tournament, which is the lowest grade of this week’s men’s events on the main ATP Tour.
Off to Acapulco now...
At ATP Acapulco (500 event, hard courts), Rafael Nadal is the obvious danger-man and the 13/8 (2.63) favourite. Rafa is in the top half of the draw. In the bottom half, things could open up...
Reigning Acapulco men’s champion Nick Kyrgios was 25/1 here twelve months ago. This time Nick is around 7/1 to defend his title. Given the Australian’s fitness record and unpredictability, those odds look best left alone for Kyrgios.
Talking of momentum, in Nick’s quarter of the draw, two in-form men get our attention at around 20/1 each...
Felix Auger-Aliassime has just reached two finals in a row. The 19-year-old looks keen to get his first ATP trophy. If he stays fit & healthy this week, Felix can go deep again.
Kyle Edmund ended a long run of injury and loss of form by winning a second ATP title of his career earlier this month. The Brit was a 14/1 winner at ATP New York. With confidence reignited and his power game looking in very good order in New York, Kyle can build on those performances here.
In the women’s event in Mexico (International grade event, hard courts), the WTA Acapulco draw looks as wide open as any field could right now...
Sloane Stephens is the 5/1 favourite and in the top half of the draw. She won this trophy in 2016. But for the last couple of seasons, the American has been badly out of form. Stephens has started 2020 with a record of played 3 matches, lost 3 matches.
With the women’s Acapulco field looking like anything-can-happen territory, I like two outsiders here – one from each side of the draw...
The 22-year-old Tamara Zidansek hasn’t shown much form so far this year, but she’s an improving young player overall and one to follow in the months & years to come. With a hard-hitting game that is very impressive on a good day, the Slovenian could put a ‘surprise’ run together here. At 40/1 and 33/1, she’s available at Ones to Watch prices.
In the bottom half, 50/1 outsider Jasmine Paolini is one of a handful or more underdogs that could come through this side of the Acapulco draw-sheet...
The 24-year-old Italian is up to a career-best No.94 in the world. She’s shown a few glimpses of hard-court form in recent times, reaching a semi final and then a final on hard courts on the lower-tier ITF Tour in November.
If the returning-from-injury Katie Boulter isn’t at full speed in the 1st round, Paolini could advance there – and from then on, a run would not be out of the question.
Ones to Watch:
Outright Winner picks – Each Way
Each Way terms: 1/2 odds 1-2 places.
Bookies suspend their Outright Winner markets during each day’s matches. Play starts in Santiago from 4pm (UK time) and 10pm in Acapulco.
I’ll be back in the week with the latest from this week’s tournaments.
Enjoy the tennis…
Best wishes,
Tom Wilson
