WTA Austin - Ones to Watch at 16/1 and 33/1...

Good morning. We hit the bar last week with 18-year-old Arthur Fils reaching the ATP Marseille semi finals at 28/1. We were one match win away from an Each Way payout there.
There are five tournaments on the calendar this week, and we’re getting our business underway with two selections for the inaugural women’s outdoor hard-court event in Austin, Texas…
WTA Austin - ATX Open
This 250-grade event is a new stop-off on the modern-day circuit, with the WTA Tour returning to Texas for the first time in over a decade. It could pay to follow a couple of American players here…
Alycia Parks is one to watch. The 22-year-old is up to a career-high no.50 in the rankings, on the back of winning her maiden title at the start of the month (WTA 250 Lyon @ 9/1). That impressive performance led us to get behind Alycia at big odds for this year’s US Open.
Parks has lost two out of three matches since that breakout result in France, but I expect her to get back to winning ways now she’s back in the States, after recent stop-offs in Austria and Mexico. Her serve is a serious weapon, and she looks very much a young and up-and-coming prospect in American women’s tennis. Odds of 16/1, 12/1 and 10/1 are available this week - bigger than when Parks won a similar 250-grade title less than a month ago.
For big prices, an outsider who could go against the odds here is Taylor Townsend. The 26-year-old is back on the tour, having become a mother in 2021. Currently ranked outside the world’s top 100, at no.125, there’s nothing in Taylor’s 2023 form to suggest a run of form is about to appear this week. However, Townsend’s talent is not in question - and she’s one of those U.S players who does tend to come alive when playing in the States…
Indeed, in her last tournament in the USA, Taylor won the annual lower-tier ITF event played on outdoor hard courts here in Texas - the Tyler Pro. That was in October. In fact, all 13 of Townsend’s career pro titles have come in the States. She’s got a tough opener this week against compatriot, Sloane Stephens. But you never know what you’re gonna get from Stephens, and I wouldn’t put it past Townsend surprising a few observers this week. Odds of 33/1, 28/1 and 25/1 are good underdog territory for us.
