A high-quality outsider at 150/1...

Monday 6th January 2025

Good afternoon, and happy new year…

We’re setting off to work for 2025 today. A new tennis season, a new hope…

And we start as we mean to continue:

Backing big-odds outsiders at exciting Each Way prices…

If you’re a long-time Ones to Watch follower, right back from when I was using the Tom Wilson pen-name. Then you’ll know that Marketa Vondrousova owes us nothing…

We were on the supremely-talented left-hander as a 40/1 Each Way runner-up at the French Open in 2019, when Marketa was still just a teenager. She said nerves got the better of her in that maiden Grand Slam final appearance. And she then went all the way in her next Grand Slam final…

Vondrousova won Wimbledon in 2023, from a giant starting price of 150/1. We got on the gifted and enigmatic Czech halfway through SW19 that summer, taking 40/1 for the win. She became the first unseeded woman in history to win Wimbledon. That’s the kind of thing this tricky but tough player is capable of…

As with another high-quality Czech woman named in your new Ones to Watch 2025 Special Report: The Czech-list, Karolina Muchova. It’s mainly injuries that have slowed Vondrousova’s progress…

Indeed, after the latest setback in 2024 (shoulder surgery), Marketa sits as no.39 in the world. A ranking that puts her in with the outsider prices in the bookies’ Outright Winner markets for the inaugural Grand Slam of 2025, next week’s Australian Open. However, the 25-year-old is a two-time Major finalist, and has been as high as no.6 before.

Off-court, last year’s divorce may also have had an impact. But that’s mere speculation on my part.

What I can tell you is, Vondrousova looked very good in her first match of the season this morning. In what was actually her first competitive outing on tour since Wimbledon last July, the Czech swung down 22 aces - a massive figure, whether you’re talking about the women’s or the men’s game.

Marketa looked in fine fettle, with no visible injury tape. And as this video clip shows, all of the craft, guile, and creative shot-making skills we admire about her were on show with a beautiful lobbed winner.

Of course, one shot and one win does not a champion make…

But if the two-time Grand Slam finalist continues to impress at WTA Adelaide this week, then next week’s Aussie Open triple-figure odds may disappear before a ball has been hit at Melbourne Park…

That’s my thinking for getting behind Marketa Vondrousova as an Each Way outsider for the Australian Open today, even though the draw isn’t made until this Thursday. We want to get the 150/1 and 100/1 while it’s there…

You may point to Marketa’s previous results at the Aussie Open, rightly noting that she’s never been past the Last 16 (4th round) here. And I would simply remind you that Vondrousova had never even been past the 2nd round at Wimbledon before she won it. Enigmatic is the word. And at these prices, she is one to watch in the biggest tournaments…
