This week’s picks – and golden nuggets for The Open…
Tuesday 12th July 2022
Good morning,
In yesterday’s Outright Winner preview we got on three players for this week’s ATP tournaments…
In Newport, USA, our man Jack Sock started well last night. With a straight sets 1st round victory, beating the potentially tricky Radu Albot, 6-1, 7-6. Jack played the big points well, and continues to look ‘up for it’ on grass this summer.
Our other pick for the Hall of Fame Open in Newport is Benjamin Bonzi. He plays in the 1st round later today, priced as a 1/6 (1.17) favourite to beat qualifier, William Blumberg.
In Sweden, we’re on the promising youngster Sebastian Baez. He plays in the ATP Bastad 1st round this afternoon, priced as the 2/7 (1.29) favourite to beat Arthur Rinderknech.
You can watch ATP Newport and ATP Bastad on live streaming on various bookie websites this week, including Bet365 and Skybet (provided you have an account with them).
On Friday, Saturday & Sunday, Free Sports will be showing the quarter finals, semi finals & final from Newport. That’s on Sky channel 442, Virgin channel 553, or online at the Free Sports Player website (or app).
Golden nuggets for The Open…
Now for a little detour to Scotland, and the famous Old Course of St Andrews…
As you know, I’m a tennis man. But I also like to dip my oar into a few other sports from time to time. Especially for the big events. And in golf, they don’t come much bigger than The Open Championship…
At The Masters and then the US PGA this spring, I mentioned that Xander Schauffele was on my ‘one day he will win one’ list for a Major. Convincing yourself that something is going to happen can be a dangerous game in betting. The American is still searching for a big one. But having just won three tournaments in a row, he certainly arrives at The Open this week in sparkling form, and as the bookies’ second-favourite (16/1 at best), behind Rory McIlroy at 10/1.
Another player I mentioned at the PGA Champs was Matthew Fitzpatrick at 45/1. He finished joint-5th there, for an Each Way place return – having been in the lead at one stage. The Englishman then went on to win the US Open at 25/1. He’s staying on my list this week…
The last Major of the year tees off at St Andrews on Thursday morning. The two men I’m going for are Cameron Smith at 28/1, and Matthew Fitzpatrick at 20/1.
Smith posted a credible (Tied) Top 10 finish at the Scottish Open last week. That was the Australian’s best result since an impressive T3 finish at The Masters at Augusta in April. Last week’s performance in Scotland shows a decent bit of links form, just at the right time. One nugget of info I saw online yesterday is that Cameron is ranked 2nd in the field for this week’s Open for ‘wind’ scores in his last 24 rounds. Which, heatwave or not, might come in handy up on the coast this weekend. Here’s another interesting stat: world no.6 Smith is the highest-ranked player yet to win a Major.
Fitzpatrick is having a fantastic year, and there could be more to come. As mentioned, he finished in the Each Way places at the US PGA Championship in May (T5). Then won a maiden Major, taking the title at the US Open last month. That win came at the Brookline course; the same venue where Fitzpatrick had won as a Junior. Which leads us to another intriguing ‘nugget’ for The Open this week… Matt also won here at St Andrews as a Junior, back in 2008. That sounds like a great omen to me.
