Palermo picks for this afternoon...
Tuesday 19th July 2022
Good morning. It’s a nice busy week on the tours, with four tournaments taking place. We’re focusing on the women’s event in Italy…
Paolini starts well in Palermo…
In the Outright Winner market, we got our money down for WTA Palermo on Sunday night/ Monday morning. You can catch up on that email here.
Jasmine Paolini was recommended at a top price 20/1 Each Way, and went off at more like 16s and 14s by yesterday afternoon. With an impressive 6-3, 6-1 win in the 1st round last night, the Italian looks very much in good shape and keen to impress in front of a home crowd here. In this morning’s revised market, Betfred are a best price 12/1.
Our other underdog selection is French teenager Diane Parry at 33/1. The 19-year-old plays this afternoon (see below). Odds of 33/1 are still available as I write with several firms – Bet365, Paddy Power & Betfair Sportsbook, Ladbrokes & Coral, Betway, and Boylesports. Each Way terms: 1/2 odds for 1-2 places.
Match picks for this afternoon…
Today I have half-a-dozen selections in the Match Winner market. All of these are for WTA Palermo.
The first match is due to start from 3pm UK time:
Diane Parry to beat Lauren Davis @ Evens (2.0)
As a win single, I’m getting behind our youngster, Diane Parry, to beat Lauren Davis. The American is an honest competitor, and can cause problems. But on clay, the upside really has to be with the new kid on the block here. Age 19, Parry already has 99 career match wins to her name on clay. In comparison, Davis has 82 wins – despite being around a lot longer (age 28).
5-fold match acca @ 5/1+
As a match combo, odds of 5/1+ for these five fancied players to all win today also appeals:
Xiyu Wang to beat Lucia Bronzetti – the home player reached the quarter finals here last year, but right now, Xiyu Wang is the youngster bringing the form. The 21-year-old is up to a new career-high ranking of no.94, with more expected in the months and years to come. One of the new crop of Chinese women on the WTA Tour, the left-hander has reached a quarter final and semi final in her last two clay-court tournaments. Last week in Budapest, Wang beat French Open 2021 champion Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets.
Xinyu Wang to beat Julia Grabner – another promising young Chinese player inside the world’s Top 100, the 20-year-old Xinyu Wang won an ITF title on clay in May. Austrian opponent Julia Grabner has never been higher than no.141 in the rankings, and actually lost in the Palermo qualifying rounds over the weekend (entered the main draw as a Lucky Loser courtesy of an injury withdrawal).
Nuria Parrizas-Diaz to beat Asia Muhammad – the Spaniard is the one to follow in this battle of the 31-year-olds. Something of a late bloomer, Parrizas-Diaz is a Top 50 player these days, with 133 clay-court match wins to her name. American Muhammad has never been inside the Top 100 in Singles, and has just the 62 clay wins on her CV (with 65 losses).
Panna Upvardy to beat Lucrezia Stefanini – I’m willing to oppose the home player here, with Hungary’s Upvardy higher in the rankings, and showing some signs of hitting a bit of form recently. That includes a match-point-losing heartbreaker in the 2nd-round at Wimbledon, and a three-set defeat in Budapest last week. I sense that she’ll click for a few wins soon.
Martina Trevisan to beat Elina Avanesyan – Russian teenager Avanesyan won through qualifying with two 2-0 victories at the weekend, but our French Open friend Trevisan is the strong favourite in tonight’s match – given top billing on the Tuesday schedule in Palermo. Martina has reached a quarter final, semi final (French Open), and final, in her last three clay events.
