Wimbledon: Men's outsiders - and a 33/1 teenager...
Monday 1st July 2024
Wimbledon – Email #2
It’s the opening day at SW19, and the grass courts are looking pristine…
The tournament draws were made on Friday, and I’m happy with the path that’s been handed to our first Wimbledon Women’s Ones to Watch pick, last week’s 66/1 shot Qinwen Zheng. Catch up on the full advice for Zheng here. 888 Sport are still going 66/1 as I write, with 50/1 widely available in general elsewhere (Each Way: 1/2 odds 1-2 places).
The Chinese player featured in my pre-season Ones to Watch in 2024 report, and I’ve got another young lady from that list for us to add to our Wimbledon book today…
33/1 teenager…
Mirra Andreeva plays in the 1st Round this afternoon, with the 17-year-old Russian taking on another very promising teenager, fellow 17-year-old, Brenda Fruhvirtova. The Czech youngster is the underdog here. Andreeva is the one for us to follow at Wimbledon this year…
Mirra won 6 matches to come through Qualifying and make the 4th Round (Last 16) on her Wimbledon debut last year. Since then, the extremely highly-rated teenager has climbed to a current career-high of no.23 in the world rankings. Showcasing her taste for the big stage on several occasions already - reaching the Last 16 at the Australian Open this January, and then going a couple better and making a first Grand Slam semi final at the French Open just a few weeks ago…
Clearly, Andreeva is on the up. I’ve spoken before about not getting massive prices for her from the bookmakers. But right now, I’m actually happy with the 25/1+ quotes that we’re seeing. There could be a few holes appearing in Mirra’s part of the draw, and either way - she is rapidly showing that she has the talent and potential to punch through against the best. As with Coco Gauff when she was first making waves as a rising teenage star, the big moment feels like it’s going to arrive sooner rather than later.
Men’s outsiders at 40/1…
In the Men’s Outright Winner market, the outsider approach we’re taking is one that I’ve mentioned a couple of times in recent years: getting an American male back into Grand Slam contention…
America hasn’t had a men’s Wimbledon champion since Pete Sampras in 2000. Two USA representatives that you and I have been following at big prices for some time now are Tommy Paul, and Taylor Fritz…
Paul arrives at SW19 having just won Queen’s; with victory at Queen’s Club historically being a very good sign of things to come at Wimbledon. The 27-year-old, world no.13 has reached the Last 16 here before (2022), and I really like his ‘dark horse’ chances this fortnight. Tommy has won 6 out of 7 matches on grass so far this summer…
Fritz has an identical record on the turf this season, going 6-1, and arriving at the All England Club having just become the first man to ever win the ATP Eastbourne title three times. Taylor says he’s serving the best he ever has on the grass right now. The world no.12 can go deep here this time; a former Wimbledon quarter-finalist (2022), and still only 26 years of age now, Fritz was first in our Ones to Watch notes as a teenager - and he now has added experience and big-match maturity to draw upon…
We’ll take underdog odds in the region of 40/1 each for these two American hopes…
