Wimbledon young guns at 50/1 and 100/1...
Friday 3rd July 2026
This service is all about backing young players at big prices. And I’ve got two for us today…
JOAO FONSECA got a glowing write-up in my pre-season report. After an impressive run to a first Grand Slam quarter final at the French Open this spring, where he beat Novak Djokovic. The 19-year-old Brazilian, ranked no.27 in the world, has started Wimbledon this week with a brace of 3-0 match wins. He may be building momentum for a big run. Odds of 50/1 appeal. As I’ve said before: this kid is the real deal.
Last season’s pre-season list focused on Czech players. A good few of them are still very much in the running here at SW19 this summer. Not least our 50/1 early-bird pick for the women’s title, Karolina Muchova. She’s also yet to drop a set through the opening two rounds. Muchova is on a six-match winning streak on grass after lifting the WTA Bad Homburg title last week. Very promising signs there.
One young player who didn’t make our 2025 Czech-list is NIKOLA BARTUNKOVA. The 20-year-old has risen significantly up the rankings over the past year, and is now inside the Top 50 (no.48). What I like about Bartunkova is that she’s got a quirky game style and character; plays with a smile, and opponents don’t know if she’s going to throw in a slice, a loopy junk-ball, or reel off a powerful winner. She’s awkward to play against.
Nikola nearly beat world no.1 and Wimbledon 2026 favourite Aryna Sabalenka the other day. An 8-3 match win-loss record on grass since the start of June is an intriguing form line. This is a young player who seems to relish taking on the bigger names, and that’s a great trait that you can’t teach. Odds of 100/1+ are ideal Ones to Watch territory for us.
Play starts in the 3rd round from 11am today. Fonseca is due on court first, with Bartunkova playing this afternoon.
