Up for some fun at 5/1...

Monday 15th June 2020

In your Ones to Watch email today:

  • Ultimate Tennis Showdown…
  • One of those rare occasions…
  • Play starts 3pm, live on Eurosport…

Our 3/1 underdog pick Alexander Zverev put up a decent fight against the World No.1 on Sunday afternoon.

In the end, Novak Djokovic got the win, 4-0, 1-4, 4-2. But that didn’t end up being enough to get Novak through to the final of his new Adria Tour event in his home country of Serbia.

Dominic Thiem went on to take the honours in the title match. Thiem will be heading to France to compete in another new event this month…

Ultimate Tennis Showdown…

Over in the south of France, the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) got underway at the weekend. We looked at this ‘experimental’ and ‘innovative’ new event in yesterday’s email. You can get my initial thoughts on the UTS format here.

The UTS brand of tennis certainly won’t be for everyone. I had to cringe when I realised the chair umpire is calling the scores using the player nicknames that have been invented by the organisers. ‘1-0, The Greek God’ is never going to have the same ring to it as, ’15-0, Tsitsipas.’

Thankfully, the on-screen scoreboards are still using the traditional player surname method (!).

  • All the UTS matches are live on the Eurosport channels. Or you can pay to watch online at the official UTS website

Up for some fun at 5/1…

Today is one of those rare occasions where I put up a match acca. We have less than a handful of days a year like this, where the match schedules and line-ups get me keen to roll up the players into one speculative bet.

These kinds of combo fall in the fun category. Accumulators are never going to be the core of your Ones to Watch service. But if you fancy a 5/1 shot with legs today, then here are my picks for four of the matches on the Monday schedule at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown:

  • Lucas Pouille to beat Elliott Benchetrit (3pm)
  • David Goffin to beat Matteo Berrettini (5.30pm)
  • Feliciano Lopez to beat Alexei Popyrin (8pm)
  • Stefanos Tsitsipas to beat Richard Gasquet (9.15pm)

I’m covering four of the day’s five UTS matches there. Dustin Brown v Benoit Paire is billed as ‘The Artist’ v ‘The Rebel’ – and I’m leaving that one out, as anything could happen between those two entertainers, especially in this new fast playing format with tiebreak-style sets and shot-clocks.

Pouille and Tsitsipas are clear favourites on the odds and rankings. While Goffin and Lopez are my picks to hold firm and show the greater consistency over the course of their respective matches.

You can get around 5/1 for the four-fold acca…

Ultimate Tennis Showdown:

Play starts 3pm UK time
Live on Eurosport

There are over 80 matches on the worldwide schedule today. And loads more to come every day. Next week, tennis returns to London, too. I’ll be keeping you abreast of all of it.

P.S

Go Against the Crowd at Ascot this week…

Royal Ascot starts on Tuesday. Our racing analyst Nick Pullen is all set for the first festival since the restart, with daily coverage in his Against the Crowd service.

In Nick’s own words:

“I’ll be betting in the Buckingham Palace Handicap and the Ascot Stakes – on Tuesday afternoon – the races that open and close the card....

And I’ll be betting on plenty more handicap races throughout the rest of the week – there’s 13 to choose from this year....

As always, I’ll oppose the favs, the fancied and the general market consensus with ‘live’ alternatives up at wrong prices....

It’s a strictly contrarian approach. I make no promises. I make no guarantees. I expect to get more wrong than I get right....

But I always seek out big ones. I have a proper go at it. And you can expect winners too…”

Enjoy the tennis,

Best wishes,

Oliver Upstone
