No sooner had I sent out this week’s tournament pick on Monday night - Emma Navarro for WTA Bad Homburg - a clutch of other bookies went up with the advised top-price of 16/1 Each Way.
Bet365, BetVictor, Skybet, Paddy Power & Betfair Sportsbook offered that price until Tuesday morning, to go alongside William Hill and Boylesports as originally quoted. Hopefully you were able to get on.
Navarro had a decent win on Tuesday afternoon, beating Naomi Osaka, 6-4, 6-4. Our pick now moves into the Bad Homburg quarter finals on Thursday, where she’ll take on fellow American, Jessica Pegula.
Jess is the older player and higher-ranked (no.3). But Emma is Top 10 herself these days, and I’m expecting this to be a close match; both women have similar games in that they are very consistent players, both reliable and steady ball strikers. While Pegula has the more potent attacking game, Navarro in my opinion is the better mover, and would edge it on defensive skills.
The bookies make the younger American the underdog, with Navarro at around 11/8 (2.38) to beat Pegula. Of the two, I’d say the favourite Pegula is more likely to have ‘one eye’ on staying match fit for Wimbledon next week.
