Wimbledon update: So many to choose from...

Monday 30th June 2025

Wimbledon is underway - and what a day for it…

We’re in for a scorching opening to the tournament, with the sun beating down on the All England Club as I write, and the heatwave set to continue tomorrow…

I wasn’t lucky enough to get tickets in the Public Ballot this year. But before the start of play today I received this photo from friends of mine who made it there…

Wimbledon photo from this morning

As lovely as that setting is, you don’t need to be courtside to enjoy the action at Wimbledon…

The BBC are covering hundreds of matches, with all-court live streams available on the iPlayer…

There were 64 matches on the day one schedule. And the action continues with another 64 tomorrow, as the 1st round concludes…

With so many matches to choose from, I’m busy beavering away here on the stats, form, prices & markets. Monday’s play will run into the evening. Tuesday’s matches start from 11am…

Those intense Wimbledon schedules are part of the reason I’ve introduced the NEW text message tips to your Ones to Watch service for this fortnight:

  • Sending you match picks to your phone by text message allows me to use a quick and simple format to get time-sensitive match info & advice out to you

With these new text tips (which are included in the service at no extra cost to yourself), you won’t be getting my usual in-depth write-up, analysis & reasoning. I have 160 characters or so to get the info to you, in as quick and simple a way as possible.

These text messages are something a bit different; an addition to Ones to Watch, alongside our go-to, long-read pieces on the tournament Outright Winner markets…

On that note, you can read Sunday’s full tournament preview including 100/1 Each Way picks here. The word count is substantial there, and that won’t change: in the Outright Winner markets for the biggest tournaments, I’m always going to have lots to tell you about.

What’s more, if I’m telling you about a 100/1 rank outsider, then I need the space to explain my thinking, the evidence, the form and feeling behind the pick. In comparison, the new text message picks are straight and to the point, fast and direct.

Talking of having lots to choose from, it’s not just matches and players…

There are also numerous markets available for every match at Wimbledon…

The most common of these is of course Match Winner - betting on one player to beat another. But options such as Total Games, Total Sets, and Handicaps, to name just three, all come into my crosshairs when studying the daily schedules.

Match Winner being the most well-known market, I just wanted to let you know - especially if you’re new to Ones to Watch and/ or betting on tennis - that different bookies have different payout rules for Match Winner bets in the event of a player retiring ill/ injured during a match…

Read more on this subject on our website here.

Right now, the ‘fairest’ bookmaker in this department is Skybet, and that’s why you’ll see Sky feature frequently in your new text message tips (depending on the odds on offer, of course).

Skybet’s rules for Match Winner payouts are as follows:

Sky Bet retirement rules for tennis, odds context.

Those match payout rules at Skybet mean that if a player retires from a match during the first set, all bets on the match winner will be void. If a player retires after the first set has been completed, then the player going through to the next round will pay out as the match winner, and bets on the player who retired will be void. In other words, you won’t lose your stake.

Note: I don’t get anything from Skybet for telling you this. It’s not an advert or paid endorsement. I’m just sharing my knowledge of the (potential minefield that can be) tennis match winner markets!

These days, I also have so many ways to get in touch with you…

  • Emails like this one are the absolute core of the service. That won’t be changing any time soon

  • We also have a WhatsApp channel for service announcements

  • Then of course we have the new SMS text messages

  • And your Ones to Watch members-only website is always updated (on the archive) every time any bet advice is sent out

  • I’m also thinking of adding some videos in the future, too (interested? Let me know)...

I think that covers everything for today!

Coming up next:

Look out for the next text message picks on Tuesday morning around 8 - 9am. The day’s first matches will start from 11am.

And I’ll be back with your next email and an update/ next advice on the Outright Winner markets, on Thursday.
