Rome Masters – 200/1 and 2/1 picks for today…

Tuesday 11th May 2021

In Ones to Watch today:

  • WTA Rome Masters – Outright Winner pick…
  • One to Watch at 200/1…
  • 2/1 match double for today…

Good morning. There’s another 9am start on the cards in Rome, so I’ll get straight into today’s business…

Our two men’s Outright Winner picks both won their 1st round matches on Monday, 33/1 Jannik Sinner and 150/1 Lorenzo Musetti. Sinner plays Rafael Nadal tomorrow. Musetti takes on the big-serving Reilly Opelka today.

One to Watch in Rome at 200/1…

In the women’s event, I’m putting up a first selection today. Our recent 100/1+ early-bird Ones to Watch contender for the French Open, Veronika Kudermetova. With 200/1 and 150/1 available ahead of this morning’s play…

Veronika has a tough draw, but that massive price allows and compensates for that. Kudermetova is 0-4 against today’s opponent Elise Mertens (who is 50/1 for the title). But the Russian is on the up right now, and is a threat to anyone the way she’s been playing over the past month or so.

What’s more, Mertens usually gives up plenty of chances on her own serve. And just six days ago in Madrid, the Belgian had to pull out with a hamstring issue. Mertens plays Doubles as well as Singles – she’s entered in both draws again here at WTA Rome this week. That busy schedule could cost her.

World No.1 Ashleigh Barty is in this section of the draw. The Australian is a winning machine at the moment, reaching finals in three of her last four tournaments. She’s never managed to string two match wins together here in Rome though; and again, a heavy playing schedule may result in some level of mental or physical fatigue at some point.

At big prices, Kudermetova is a player I want to be behind this season.

2/1 match double for today…

There are also two matches I like today for a win double, paying around 2/1 (3.0):

Sloane Stephens is only here via a Lucky Loser entry, having failed in Qualifying. However, she is 4-1 in career matches against her friend and fellow American, Madison Keys. Stephens has the edge on Keys, and I would say even more so on clay.

Aslan Karatsev v Daniil Medvedev is an all-Russian battle in the men’s. Medvedev is the big name and higher-ranked, but Karatsev leads the head-to-head, 2-0, and is having the season of his life. He also looks more at home on clay, with Medvedev quite vocal about his dislike of the red dirt.
