Ones to Watch in Vienna and Basel – at 100/1 and 25/1…

Monday 23rd October 2023

In my last Ones to Watch email to you, I said that this game can drive you mad

More evidence of frustration and near misses for us from last week’s picks…

With 125/1 youngster Giovanni Mpetchi Perricard giving a good account of himself in Antwerp. The 20-year-old Frenchman reached a career-first ATP quarter final. But ultimately beaten two sets to one by Alexander Bublik, who went on to lift the trophy…

Elsewhere, our 33/1 shot Laslo Djere reached the semi finals in Stockholm. Only to arrive in that match severely hampered, feeling unwell – and with tiredness to contend with, too, having played ‘til midnight in his match the night before… Gael Monfils knockout out our man, and went on to win the final…

While in Tokyo, Ben Shelton won his first ATP title. Coming through some epic scraps along the way. The 21-year-old was 14/1 there. You and I were on young Ben the week before at 100/1 and 80/1 in Shanghai… where he reached the quarter finals, edged out in a final-set tiebreak…

Close but no cigar… in the right ballpark… knocking on the door… call it what you like…

The message from me today is: keep the faith. Ones to Watch is all about outsiders and underdogs. Let’s roll up the sleeves and go again…

Ones to Watch in Vienna and Basel – at 100/1 and 25/1…

For this week’s first selections – one each for the two men’s tournaments starting at lunchtime today.

Following the themes hinted at above: one youngster seeking his maiden ATP trophy… and one ‘repeat’ pick for us from last time out…

At ATP Vienna, 22-year-old MATTEO ARNALDI is one to watch – available at a standout 100/1 with Betfred, and 50/1 33/1 elsewhere.

The young Italian isn’t (yet) known for his indoor form. But it’s all upside right now, and Matteo has impressed in numerous matches throughout the season. Breaking the Top 50 and reaching a first semi final. As well as claiming a few scalps along the way, such as beating current world no.8 Casper Ruud.

This late-season event in Vienna might just see a few of the big-name, short-price favourites turn up under par. Big servers tend to do well in indoor hard-court conditions like these. On that note: Arnaldi has recently claimed wins over the likes of Jan-Lennard Struff and Alexei Popyrin – both of whom are known for their power and serves.

At ATP Basel, the next-time-lucky pick for us is TALLON GRIEKSPOOR at 25/1 20/1.

Those are bigger prices than we took for the 27-year-old Dutchman indoors at Stockholm last week, where he bowed out in the quarter finals.

Having won his first two ATP titles this year, and also reached the semi finals at the ATP 500 event indoors in Rotterdam. Let’s keep the world no.25 on side at this week’s indoor 500 tournament in Switzerland…
