San Diego update - and our September schedule...
Thursday 14th September 2023
Good morning. I had to drag myself to bed in a funk the other night…
Death by a thousand cuts…
Watching Ekaterina Alexandrova’s scrappy three-set loss to Jelena Ostapenko was like death by a thousand cuts…
At the end of the second set, I was brimming with optimism. Alexandrova had come from 0-4 down, saving break points to prevent going 0-5 behind. And went on to save match point, before taking the set on a tiebreak…
Ekaterina then moved into a commanding lead of her own in the decider, but then failed to serve out the match not once but twice, from 5-2 up…
Ostapenko then turned the gas back on, and eventually scuffed and thudded her way to a 7-6, 6-7, 7-5 win. Ouch.
As up and down as that scoreboard was, with multiple swings in momentum. That’s actually the kind of crazy match that is common on the WTA Tour. Great for in-play trading on the Betfair Exchange, if you happened to be online and alert at midnight (both women were very short odds-on at one stage, and vice versa). Not so good if you’re sweating on a fixed-odds bet, as given out in this service by yours truly.
Collins in the quarter finals tonight…
Better news and a better night’s sleep followed with our other WTA San Diego selection…
Danielle Collins needed a 10-minute injury timeout for her back. But the American came back on court rejuvenated after that, recovering from a set and a break down to exact some revenge on Ostapenko for us last night – coming through 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
A semi-finalist in San Diego last year, Collins is now into the quarter finals, where she’ll play Caroline Garcia.
With star names such as 4/1 pre-tournament favourite and world no.7 Ons Jabeur already sent packing from elsewhere in the draw this week. This is a chance for Danielle to take a Top 10 scalp and continue to excite the home crowd…
The bookies are now sweet on Collins. She’s priced at 1/2 (1.5) to beat Garcia – and encouragingly, the head-to-head between those two is 2-0 to our player.
While in the tournament Outright Winner market, the bookmakers have this morning installed Collins as the new 3/1 (4.0) or 11/4 (3.75) favourite for the trophy. We’re on at 14/1 or 12/1, Each Way.
Coming up…
I’m on holiday next week. When I return, we’ll have the remainder of a busy September schedule to shoot at – with the tours returning to China for the first time since before the pandemic…
And the season continues throughout October and November. With the circuit taking us everywhere from Shanghai to Paris, from Romania to Mexico…
You can check out the September calendar on our website here.
I’ll be back in your inbox on 25th September – if not before…
Enjoy the tennis…
Best wishes,
Oliver Upstone
